Think we're bad? Be glad we're not Republicans right now
Edited on Thu Feb-07-08 12:28 PM by Armstead
Count your blessings. No matter how bad the Hillary Obama battle is getting, it pales in comparison to what the Republicans are going through.

The GOP has been in their own tong war this primary season.

Now the GOP is looking at having a candidate, McCain, who irritates the heck out of their conservative base.

Meanwhile, as Romney fades away, their only choice is Crazy Mike -- who appeals to the evengelicals on social religious issues, but is "too liberal" on some aspects of economic policy. But he is too conservative to appeal to many swing voters.

Meanwhile, Rush and Hannity are in for a real case of whiplash with all of the spinning they're going to have to do. They've been demonizing McCain -- but at some point they're going to have to fall into lock-step to avoid being defacto supporters of the Democratic candidate.

Meanwhile, the more moderate, Establishment Republicans are going to be stuck with the unpredictable loose cannon McCain, rather than an old reliable.

5. here's why they hate McCain
The AP asked the candidates their coffee preferences - silly, yes, considering the state of the country and the world. But McCain's response makes me giggle because you know it would cause heads to explode at FR:

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani: Splenda, Sweet'n Low or Equal, whichever is available

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee: Splenda

Arizona Sen. John McCain: Cappuccino or coffee with cream and sugar

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney: Doesn't drink it, has been known to have hot chocolate

Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson: Cream

7. Don't forget the Ron Paul folks
Sure, he only got about 5,000 votes in Arkansas Tuesday, but I think all 5,000 of them are in Northwest Arkansas. If Paul runs on the Libertarian ticket, I guarantee they will bolt the GOP and go to him, probably bringing along many friends and neighbors. They even have billboards up for him around here! Unreal--and NO signs for anyone else.

11. I don't feel sorry for them
People underestimate the GOP's coalition-building capabilities. McCain will choose someone acceptable to the fundies, and they'll get over their hissy fit and vote for him. He'll enlist old-school advisors to placate the corporatists. The GOP will be as united as ever come November. I worry about OUR party.

I'm just glad I'm not one of them.

I think this will be a serious problem for them. They're experiencing the fraying that weakened the Democrats.

After years of lock-step unity, they're now getting a taste of what it's like to have a fracturing coalition.

13. Neo-conservatives have no one in this race for them, boo hoo hoo
I say Good Riddance! It is very amusing to me to watch the Neoconservatives and those who sucked up to them for nearly 8 years wallow in their pity. Hate to break it to Rush, Hannity, etc. but very few people in the United States wants a George Bush type in the GE. You made your bed, go lie in it and vote 3rd party or suck it up and kiss McCain's ass cause he is going to win the nomination. Plus, the Dems are outvoting you and all the enthusiasm in on our side.

19. Now that you mention it....
I do seem to have vague recollections of Rush railing against bush in their primaries. But I could be wrong.

In any case, though McCain isn't GW. A lot of cons seem to really hate him, rather than being wary like they were about GW.

17. Want to know a secret?
They aren't very good at politics.

They have their system rigged to get it over so their guy doesn't get exposed which adds the perception of being a WINNER

They are so bad at politics that when they actually catch a sitting president cheating on his wife they don't know how to take advantage of it other then taking it public

They are so bad at politics that they only keeping them afloat is rigged voting machines and ownership of the media
