Suggestion for pulling independents and Democrats together

First, we need to realize that we cannot win anything unless we unite. Only a Democrat can beat George W. Bush in 2004. However, how about if the liberals are willing to back occasional Green or other candidates for other offices where the Democratic candidates are pro-Death Penalty or pro-free-trade, etc and where the math makes it look like a coalition will work. We need to avoid losing seats though. This will help both causes by punishing those Democratic candidates who are trying to be Republicans, by getting Bush out and by uniting the left at all times. It would require compromise on both sides but, after watching the betrayal on Prop 58 in California, it is clear we need to do something to stop our party from going Republican and we need to get the entire left to join with us where our races are close.
