Mass GOP claim senate seat victory Tues, claim gay marriage mobilized
Massachusetts is a very liberal state, and a normal state senate seat would NOT go to a Repub. The GOP is claiming that their forces were mobilized to extreme in last night's vote for state senator because of the Supreme Judicial Court's recent ruling re: same sex marriage.

How do you think this will play out during the GE? If Massachusetts is voting Republicans to office, what will happen in other states?

Full disclosure: I fully support gay marriage and don't want people to think that this post is somehow a flame.

1. of course, this might have something to do with it:
Romney also helped Brown build a sizable war chest. Brown has raised $186,000, according to the latest campaign finance reports, plus another $100,000 in assistance from the state Republican Party, one of its largest contributions to a legislative candidate, according to the Massachusetts Money and Politics Project, which monitors campaign finance. By contrast, McQuilken raised $97,000.

Had almost 3:1 dollar advantage in the race...

Which is a concern (being out fundraised) up and down the ticket in most states.

2. Reason why fundraising was off charts was gay marriage
Sorry, I wasn't clear. They didn't just "vote" for thier guy, they also donated.

Mass doesn't have a terrible amount of Republicans. The Gov Romney was basically elected because people got nervous that every other branch of gov't was dominated by Dems. More of a vote in favor of a balance of power than a vote for the repub.

5. Not completely true
Don't forget, Shannon O'Brien sucked as a candidate, and after that loser Jane Swift, they were also a little nervous about electing another woman (fair or unfair, that's the truth).

7. wasn't that just a few weeks ago (or within the month)
would have to see the records on the timing of the donations before making that assumption.

Locally the repubs have started fundraising (including reaching beyond district) like heck for positions that used to not be quite as high spending... even in traditional non-repub communities... It is their mo. You could be right... or you could be reading a different trend through a specific lens to fit a theory. Wait til records are available to see who donated and when. Very likely that most of it was prior to the SC decision.

3. The last three governors races were won by Republicans
Did the people of Massachusetts go back in time and vote for those people due to gay marriage being an issue now? Were they psychic?

Dude, you should have been there for the "go-back-in-time" election. I finally got the chance to vote for Dukakis.

4. The only good news
is that Brown will have to win the seat again in November.

8. More To The Story

Angus was not the strongest candidate. The Republican Brown was already a state representative and his wife is a TV reporter. Frankly, Brown is handsome, Angus is not.

The republican governor won this district in his election - this folks in this district are more "independent (which in MA is aka for Republican).

Republicans campaigned heavily here, against the current Speaker of the house (which is weird b/c this was a senate seat).
