WASHINGTON -- The unstoppable Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts will become the Democratic nominee for president in 2004, after sweeping coast-to-coast contests in nine of 10 states Tuesday and driving his final rival from the race today.

Kerry's sole serious challenger, Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, plans to end his campaign at home this afternoon with an announcement at a Raleigh high school.

And today in Orlando -- in the heart of the state that narrowly handed President Bush the White House in 2000 -- Kerry launches an eight-month campaign for the presidency in an appearance with Florida's two Democratic senators. . .

1. I hope Kerry is ready for the ride through hell
that lies ahead. It won't be easy wrestling power away from these monsters.
