You need to give Floridian democrats a level playing field in helping them win Florida again. Because WE are going to be the one's doing the most work here.

I'd also like to see Kerry propose an ENTIRE cabinet by the convention so that the old canard that "we can't change administration during a 'war'" is debunked.

17. Nooooo! You can't have Napolitano!
We need here here- if you think the National Congress is nuts, you should see the group we have at the state house here. She's done an awesome job handling these crooks and I want her to at least finish her first term- then she can move on to other things. By then maybe some of her good work will have set in for the long haul.

13. to win or govern, the choice is gephardt.
he will let the dems win missouri.

that wins it for the dems

he brings a motivated and long time ally in organized labor with him which is essential in the rust belt states, especially pa, mi, wisc, and perhaps ohio.

union households vote twice as much as non-union households, and a strong get out the vote from labor could easily deliver ohio to kerry/gephardt.

he brings a history of being strong on social issues, the environment and medicare/medicaid. the last of which could be of high value in courting older citizens worried about social security.

his trade policies, well, he let nafta happen as dem house leader, but that was a decade ago and he has seen the light as far as trade policies that destroy jobs.

but if the measure of a successful president is that his/her policies and inititives become law, then gephardt is immeasurably valuable in getting kerry what he wants.

gephardt has been in congress for 25 years, he knows how to get things done, he knows where the bodies are and he can be a strong presence for presidential policies in the legislature.

i can't think of a democrat other than gephardt who could help more democratic polices get thru congress.

14. I admire Gephardt but he is SO last millenium...
The old rules in Congress don't even apply anymore. There is no negotiation, conciliation or cooperation. The GOP rule is their way or the highway.

Twenty-five years as a Representative won't help at all.

19. in legislation the only true rule is he who knows process can control it
all the GOP has done is manipulate process. Gephardt can help the Dems by his knowledge of process.

when referring to the executive branch, it has powers that should not be trifled with. the ability to turn effectively that power on the legislative process by someone knowledgeable with the critical factors of the process is vitally important for the democrats to be successful in gaining their objectives.

no doubt that the congress is a crocodile laden, poisonous snake infested swamp. but all the more reason to have as a guide a well seasoned veteran dealing with it from 25 years of experience wielding the power of the executive branch in negotiating legislation.

42. Gep doesn't necessarily bring MO
I don't know anyone who was willing to support him. That includes state politicians. One exception is Holden. That's because he was Gep's boy and should have never happened. But Gep started raising $$$ for him. He took the recruitment for Gov out of the hands of the state leaders who have been here and are in touch. One reason Gep is hated is because Holden will lose our Governorship to pukes this year.

15. 1. Clark 2. Edwards 3. Gephardt 4. Graham 5. Rendell
1. Clark - For his vast intelligence, foreign policy experience, national defense experience, 4 Stars, Southern, looks don't hurt.

2. Edwards - Southern, charismatic, very smart, just generally likable and genuine. Seems to relate to the common man better than anyone and that's huge.

3. Gephardt - As a Union Member I love everything he stands for. Could help secure Ohio and West Virginia.

4. Graham - Florida is going to be huge once again and he can just stay there for 6 months campaigning for Kerry.

5. Ed Rendell - A dark horse for sure. Governor of Pennsylvania, former Mayor of Philadelphia, charismatic, intelligent and an excellent politician. I also sort of know him personally.

23. Imagine the debate between him and Cheney...
Walter Cronkite: Senator Miller, What is your stance on the Iraq war and the economics involved?

Zell Miller: Well you should let President....I mean Vice President Cheney answer the question first, I support him and the President for re-election.

WC: You support George W. Bush for President?

ZM: Yes, let the Commander in Chief Answer. You DID see "The Passion of the Christ" right?? You DO know that John Fonda is my running mate right?

Dick Cheney: I feel we need to invade Syria, it's clear we were right in Iraq and it's clear THEY have the WMDs. If You love America you will instruct your children to join the military. I no longer work for Haliburton.

WC: This is most unusual. Senator Miller, is there anything you wish to disagree with the Vice President on?

ZM: Well I think he's a little too liberal. He may need to embrace Christ a little stronger.

DC: And we will conquer Cuba, Iran, Egypt, Portugal, Saudi Arabia.....We will be at war for years. It will be glorious!

ZM: Amen!

WC: And now this ad from Philip Moriis...........

Clark is the obvious choice. He brings more to the ticket than anyone. A Washington outsider with stature on national defense. He is intelligent and knowledgeable on other issues like economics. No one else can touch his qualifications in my view.

Yet my gut tells me Kerry will go with someone more blessed by the "establishment".

40. First choice Edwards-think 2012. Followed by Wrangle and Corzine.
1.)After 8 years as vice-president John Edwards would be Super Candidate.
A Kerry/Edwards ticket could lead to 16 years of Democrats in the White House and give us almost enough time to clean up after Bush.

2.)Congressman Wrangle would be great. He's one of the best Democrats in the House and it would be nice to finally have an African-American vice-president. Does anyone know why his name is never tossed around for vp?

3.) Jon Corzine is extremely good on the jobs and economy. Good idea.

45. In our limited views here
mine would be Edwards, Clark then Graham. Of course we don't read Kerry's mind here. As for the strange appearance of Bayh. He is too soft, a milder form of Lieberman capable of honorably and affably losing the entire election or simply disappearing off the radar. That is judging from his statements and stands re. the great ingenious G.W. Bush, not his more bellicose pro-Party statements when preaching to the choir. We'll be extremely lucky to keep Mitch Daniels from taking the Indiana Governorship away from another conveniently dead Dem.

54. I read this whole thread...
Edited on Wed Mar-03-04 10:19 AM by Whitacre D_WI
...and only one mention of Max Cleland?

As far as I'm concerned, with Kerry as the nominee, his running mate needs three attributes:

1) Southern (on edit: Rust Belt or Southwest could also work)
2) Moderation (not necessarily moderate politically, but the perception thereof -- a grace under fire)
3) The ability to raise money

Cleland (and Edwards, and Clark) have the first two bases covered.

I think the big question for Kerry going forward is who will bring in the most dollars?
