I had the pleasure of going to the Senate Gallery to watch Kerry on the floor today. The first time I saw him he came in to vote and quickly danced his way around the desks and people trying to stop him and left the floor. This was to go have his picture taken with Schumer, Feinstien and Kennedy. I wasn't able to leave the third floor until he was out of the chamber area, so I couldn't get anywhere near him... The Secret Service were everywhere. They annoy all Congressional staff, because our IDs mean nothing to them. "Can't go in there." "Stop here." etc.
The second time I saw him he lingered and talked to every democratic senator on the floor, each one gave him a pat on the back. He talked with Hillary for quite a while before they were surrounded by about 10 Senators all listening intently to him. When he left, a group of Republicans which included Frist said something to him, and Kerry turned and said something back, and then Frist yelled, "ohhhh! " I want to believe that Kerry had some snidely delivered perfect putdown of Frist and co.
I also saw John Edwards come rushing into the room for one vote, talked to Schumer and a couple others and hustled out.
It was all absolutely incredible to watch. The next time this happens I encourage everyone in the D.C. area to contact their congressmen/senator for a gallery pass (or those with an ID as well) to see this.
