The question they should be asking is, "Is it possible that Hillary Clinton will come in third today, and what will that do to her prospects on Super Tuesday?"

1. they ARE obsessed
but there is a point to it. If it comes down to nearly all-black support for BHO and all-white for HRC, then it would be pretty easy to say only the bigots on either side support either one of them, and Edward's support, if significant, is what could reasonably be extrapolated to the rest of the country. If he does significantly better than the polls said a week ago, it could be seen as the beginning of a wave. Damn, I hope so.

2. I am obviously rooting for Edwards to come in second today in South Carolina.

4. if that happens
and his "surge" gets legs, which I fully expect, this could turn into a reasonably civilized campaign from there forward.

Much as Kerry and Edwards seemed to have an unspoken truce four years ago, it could play out with Obama and Edwards doing the same, with whoever gets the nod naming the other as running mate. I was pulling for Edwards then, and would be again. I was glad when Kerry picked him, and would be again. I don't know that he'd take it a second time though.

3. Mason Dixon poll shows that Edwards has surged with white voters, now leads Hillary 40% to 36%.
Edwards, the only viable white male on the Democratic side and native South Carolinian, has surged among whites. He, in fact, now leads among the trifecta of candidates, 40%-36% over Clinton.

5. Hillary and Bill's strategy worked
they turned off white voters in SC. Is it enough to allow Hillary to get a win in SC? We shall see. But the media are now saying that even if Obama wins, it won't be a win unless he can get the majority white vote. WTF?

6. But it could backfire if Edwards comes in second and Hillary third. He's ahead 40-36 with whites--

according to the latest Mason Dixon poll.
