I have noticed the DLC has had nothing negative to say about Obama. It looks like they have no problem with the "change" he will bring.

7. Obama is campaigning to the right of Clinton
Stimulate the economy: tax cuts! Have we really not moved on from 1980? Both Edwards and Clinton are proposing muli-pronged solutions which are NOT pure supply side.

One exception is Obama's policy of lifting the cap on Social Security. I think it is good politics for Clinton not to show her hand here, as Walter 'I will raise your taxes' Mondale found out.

12. Cognitive dissonance is funny.
Edited on Fri Jan-25-08 12:00 PM by Occam Bandage
"It's conservative when Obama proposes tax rebates, and non-noteworthy when he proposes tax hikes on the rich. When Hillary disagrees with raising taxes on the rich, it isn't conservative, it's...er...smart politics."

Oh, and by the way? You clearly don't know what "supply-side" means. Tax rebates for consumers are about as demand-side as you can get.

6. Obama has stated, 'I'm not a member of the DLC, but, ...

if one looks at his votes, one looks at his foreign policy statements (right out of the PPI), his approach to health care ...; one would have to split the same hair many times to find dissension from DLC politics.

I will watch this thread closely, to see if I can learn where his politics diverge.

10. I don't mind the DLC. Hillary holds a leadership chair in the DLC. Edwards was a leader in their
New Democrat coalition; he's since swung to the left. Obama clearly has few problems with them, if any. Most of the DLC hate I've seen around here comes from Kooch and Edwards supporters.

13. Policy is determined by either popular will or money
Every now and then you have politicians that will take strong stances against popular will but that usually ends with them getting their asses thrown out of office.

Obama knows that change has to come from the ground up and that is why he is trying to build a movement that will pressure our representatives to govern to the left of the DLC on certain issues. If he fails to build that movement but is still elected, then yes he will likely govern as a DLCer. With Hillary, she's going to govern as a DLCer either way.

16. It's not about his disagreements or there lack of with the DLC
The DLC provides policies based on the premise that those policies resonate with the American People and will help Democrats get elected. Indeed they may be correct that those policies are the way to get elected.

Again, Obama is trying to build a movement that will change the electoral calculus. If young people and African Americans, two very liberal blocs, for example, start voting in significantly larger numbers then the politicians will be FORCED to govern more from the left or they will lose re-election.

Ideology and disagreements with the DLC aren't the issue. Obama is going to enact policies that will get him re-elected, just like every other politician does. Hopefully the movement that he is trying to build will force him and Congress to govern more to the left in order to get re-elected.
