Losing Ugly---John Edwards will not be President
Wow, laid out like this DOES look FUGLY! GoBama!

"Then there is John Edwards. He's not going to be president, either. He stays in the race because, with the Democrats' proportional representation system, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton might end up in a very close delegate race -- perhaps allowing an also-ran with, say, 10 percent of the delegates to act as kingmaker at the convention.

It's a prize of sorts; it might even be tradeable for a Cabinet position. But at considerable cost. His campaign has been a spectacle.

Edwards has made much of his renunciation of his Iraq war vote. But he has not stopped there. His entire campaign has been an orgy of regret and renunciation:

**As senator, he voted in 2001 for a bankruptcy bill that he now denounces.

**As senator, he voted for storing nuclear waste in Nevada's Yucca Mountain. Twice. He is now fiercely opposed.

**As senator, he voted for the Bush-Kennedy No Child Left Behind education reform. He now campaigns against it, promising to have it "radically overhauled."

**As senator, he voted for the Patriot Act, calling it "a good bill . . . and I am pleased to support it." He now attacks it.

**As senator, he voted to give China normalized trade relations. Need I say? He now campaigns against liberalized trade with China as a sellout of the middle class to the great multinational agents of greed, etc.

Breathtaking. People can change their minds about something. But everything? The man served one term in the Senate. He left not a single substantial piece of legislation to his name, only an endless string of votes on trade, education, civil liberties, energy, bankruptcy and, of course, war that now he not only renounces but inveighs against.

96. The messenger can be just as important as the message.
Especially in politics, everyone has an agenda. We should always consider not only the message being communicated, but who is communicating it, and why. That's how we can stay better informed, by not just accepting things that are said at face value.

So why would a right-wing shill like Krauthammer bother commenting on the Edwards campaign, of all things? Just out of the goodness of his heart...or perhaps he is trying to affect public opinion?

Hmmm...

substandard.

If you consult a good writing coach -- even a language-lab-type person at any college or university -- he or she could probably work with you on sentence construction, including variety in parts of speech and phonetic resonance.

As for content, that could be a lost cause.

13. someone's awfully afraid of John Edwards
Is it because he might spoil the press's telling of a horse race?

Is it because he might actually be elected and start re-regulating?

What?

But Krauthammer is having one spectacular hissy fit about a bright-eyed politician.

Maybe he's just jealous of Edwards' vigor and appeal.

to do what they can to help. The problem is there is
no guarantee Edwards votes would go to Obama. Just might
help Hilary.

TV Types have been pushing the idea that John hurts Obama.

The Media are bored so they need a change in the race.

There is a lot of sick politics going on at the establishmet
level. Do not be surprised if Bloomberg comes to the rescue
of the country. I do not necessarily think he is the answer
but some do.

This financial crisis is serious.

45. Oh, snap, this is one great slam
Yes, my name is incapsulated, I hate Edwards and I endorse the rest of this OP:

Breathtaking. People can change their minds about something. But everything? The man served one term in the Senate. He left not a single substantial piece of legislation to his name, only an endless string of votes on trade, education, civil liberties, energy, bankruptcy and, of course, war that now he not only renounces but inveighs against.

Today he plays the avenging angel, engaged in an "epic struggle" against the great economic malefactors that "have literally," he assures us, "taken over the government." He is angry, embodying the familiar zeal of the convert, ready to immolate anyone who benightedly holds to any revelation other than the zealot's very latest.

Nothing new about a convert. Nothing new about a zealous convert. What is different about Edwards is his endlessly repeated claim that the raging populist of today is what he has always been. That this has been the "cause of my life," the very core of his being, ingrained in him on his father's knee or at the mill or wherever, depending on the anecdote he's telling. You must understand: This is not politics for him. "This fight is deeply personal to me. I've been engaged in it my whole life."

Except for his years as senator, the only public office he's ever held. The audacity of the all-my-life trope is staggering. By his own endlessly self-confessed record, his current pose is a coat of paint newly acquired. His claim that it is an expression of his inner soul is a farce.

A cynical farce that is particularly galling to authentic and principled left-liberals. "The one that is the most problematic is Edwards," Sen. Russ Feingold told the Post-Crescent in Appleton, Wis., "who voted for the Patriot Act, campaigns against it. Voted for No Child Left Behind, campaigns against it. Voted for the China trade deal, campaigns against it. Voted for the Iraq war. . . . He uses my voting record exactly as his platform, even though he had the opposite voting record."

It profits a man nothing to sell his soul for the whole world. But for 4 percent of the Nevada caucuses?

and it looks like this thread is turning into a vomitorium. So I guess I'll join in and show my disgust for Obamaniacs constantly linking to RW pundits in order to attack Hillary and Edwards:

71. Edwards doesn't just talk about change. He is willing to change.
The definition of insanity is said to be continuing to do something over and over although it does not work. If that is true, then changing course is a sign of sanity.

The Yucca Mountain bill enabled "the Department of Energy to submit a license application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)." When the Commission received and reviewed the application and learned the truth, the application was rejected. 15 Democrats voted for the bill including Edwards. New information indicating that nuclear waste could not be safely stored at that site explains Edwards' change of opinion.
http://www.aip.org/fyi/2002/081.html

The bankruptcy bill did not pass. Enough said. What senator hasn't regretted a single vote?

The Patriot Act was passed 98 -1 Nay (Feingold) and 1 abstention (Landrieu) in the frenzy of 9/11 by a huge majority of Congress.
http://educate-yourself.org/cn/patriotact20012006senatevote.shtml
Clinton also voted yeah. http://www.votesmart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=55463

No less a liberal than Ted Kennedy helped get No Child Left Behind through Congress. http://www.amconmag.com/2005_08_01/article.htmlIt was a daring proposal to solve a tough problem.
It passed 87 to 10 with 3 abstentions, however, the program failed miserably. http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=107&session=1&vote=00371
Clinton also voted yeah. http://www.votesmart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=55463

Clinton proposed the China Trade Bill, and Edwards, as a loyal Democrat, voted for it. This time the vote was 83 yeah, 15 nay and 2 abstentions.

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=106&session=2&vote=00251

Bush lied to Congress to get the Iraq War Authorization Bill passed. 77 yeahs and 23 nays on this one.
http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=107&session=2&vote=00237
Clinton also voted for that bill. Obama never faced the dilemma of voting yea or no on it. Edwards is honest enough to admit he was wrong. Hillary is not, as far as I know.

Edwards was a child in the segregated South. He lived through major social change in which people had to admit that they were wrong about something they and generations before them had believed was right. When you make a mistake, you admit your mistake honestly and you change and try to right your wrong. Changing your mind can be a good thing.

Stubbornly insisting on staying a failed course as President Bush has done is a sign of insanity.

83. Thank for for your post. I, too, am tired of the "flip-flop" moniker to describe CHANGE...
...and I ALSO don't appreciate it being used by someone who, when talking about change, makes up a FAIRY TALE about his "prescience" about Iraq when he flipped and flopped all over the place to finally say he was "always" against it...

77. As an Obama supporter, I don't approve of this post's contents.
I don't think there's anything wrong with Edwards staying in the race at all, and he'd certainly be my second choice. I do not think it's clear who his departure would "benefit" at this point.

87. Odd
That reads just like an "article" on Salon today about Edwards. They ignored him for most the campaign, except for the big dust up about the two bloggers who left his campaign. They did the same thing to Kucinich (except for a snarky and dismissive piece) and Gravel. Today they wrote a post mortem on Edwards' candidacy. They have been very MSM about this presidential race for a long time now. I am not an Edwards supporter, but it seems odd that someone who is running on a progressive platform keeps getting dismissed by a so-called "progressive" online publication.
