Hillary "the divider" is the only candidate in SC with significant black and white support
Edited on Thu Jan-24-08 07:49 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
The new NBC/WSJ poll had Obama rocking with AA voters, but at 10% among white voters and Edwards narrowly leading among white voters, but with small single digit black support.

Just noting the irony and/or peculiarity that in the recent SC polling only one candidate has healthy double-digit support in both groups... the (supposedly) polarizing, triangulating, southern strategy playing racist hag who nobody likes.

The world is a contrary place... it exists to humble us, contradicting our most cherished notions.

African-Americans in South Carolina break solidly for Obama, with 59 percent supporting the Illinois senator, 25 percent behind New York Sen. Clinton, 4 percent for former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards and 12 percent undecided.

White voters see the primary from the opposite direction: 40 percent support Edwards, 36 percent back Clinton, 10 percent are behind Obama and 14 percent are undecided.

13. I know wtf?

Clinton does much better with Blacks than Obama does with whites. Seriously though, if this turns out to be the figures, Obama will be labelled the "black" candidate by the time the MSM is done with him on Sunday.

about which camp wanted what to happen, and that will remain a fundamental difference between the Clinton supporters and the Obama supporters for a very long time IMO.

16. the problem is guys, this is no longer a fluke, this is a consistent flow here

The white voters are heavily resistant to Obama and they are very heavily a bigger share of all the states votes.

Its a terrible omen for Obama.

18. Why would Obama ever want to be the "black" candidate?
Serious question. What would he have to gain? Jesse Jackson... Al Sharpton... the "black" candidate hasnt done so well historically.

Either way, the point you make is one I think that could end up being a major obstacle in the GE should one of them get elected. It seems (to me anyway) that there is more division in the Democratic party than ever.

26. Ok..
I agree that it is indeed a bad strategy..and I don't even think that this is entirely Obamas fault.
But it does appear that he is playing to the AA base.
The charges of racism..again, not entirely Obamas fault, are offensive to a lot of people.
Its like the terri Schiavo case..The rethugs went out of their way to paint anyone who wanted to take people off life support as Murderers. This turned off an awful lot of people who were in similar situations and resented this deeply.
It is the same with all this racism stuff. You do not have to look far on this board to see many Obama supporters label anyone who criticizes Obama as racist.
I believe..and always have, that racism is wrong..but this kind of faux racism charge, not only cheapens real racism..but is extremly resented by the majority of people who disagree with Obama on policy issues..yet are being called racist.

31. I agree with you.
But to some extent, the same thing is happening flip-side re: Clinton and sexism. Personally, I think that both arguments are crap and they do nothing for anyone. Id also like to think that very few (if any) DU posters fall into the racist / sexist categories. Sure, there is a small percentage of people that will vote against a man of color as well as a some that will vote against a woman.

I honestly dont know which camp started the whole race issue. To me... it seems like it came out of nowhere. In fact, I think the MSM played it up more than either campaign. But I do know the Clinton camp is the only one that benefits in the long run.

So if it was an Obama camp strategy it was indeed a very bad one. Though... I do have to give them credit for not pushing the sexist meme. Then again... the gender issue (I think) is not as easy to push.

Personally, I hate that this race is come down to balck vs. white and male vs. female. I think it sucks the integrity from both candidates.

And thanks for taking the time to give me your input. :) I appreciate the conversation.

27. So he would want to be boxed in just for one state?
I dont know. Maybe you're right. Since its the last state before Feb 5th (dismissing FL). But I have a hard time seeing how it helps him overall. And I'd have to think he'd see NH as a fluke.

the same as the backlash from his Reagan comments that were only meant to be targeted to Indy's and Republicans. I think Axelrod is an idiot.

32. RE: the Reagan comments,
1. I think it was dumb for him to say that.
and
2. I think his statements were overblown by the Clinton camp.

Which brings me back to no.1... he really should have known better. While I dont think he meant to praise Reagan, he shouldnt have left himself open to attack like that. Supposing I knew what he meant by his statement, Im still left to ask "what the hell was he thinking". Axelrod should know better. Obama should too.

As far as the race thing though, it seems to me that he's tried hard to stay above it. I guess it could be argued though, that he did that when competing in "white" states like mine (NH).

I tell ya... when it come to politics... Im never sure who to believe.

22. This is all so Inside Baseball
Hillary, Obama and Edwards are all extremely popular among SC Democrats, Black or White. And I think it's the same way across America. Only the media is talking about a polarized party, because it gives them something interesting to say while they enjoy the sound of their own voices. In the end the party will come together, no matter who wins.

30. According to THIS latest poll, not only does Obama cream her among Black voters, but among
Hispanics. He also wins among women and is only losing to her among White voters by 13%:
