Poll question: You've been severely wronged or severely injured. Who you gonna call?
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 06:23 PM by Seabiscuit
We Dems have three major candidates who are all lawyers.

You need a lawyer to represent you as an advocate. You cannot afford attorneys fees or court costs up front, or for that matter at any time during your case. Assume these candidates are in private legal practice rather than running for President.

You need and want someone who:

1. Will not sell out early for a quick buck for the firm.
2. Will not compromise your rights and interests at any time in a settlement that doesn't entirely agree with your principles.
3. Will take your case all the way through trial.
4. Will win your case for you, and only after you've received your money judgment, submit a bill to you for litigation costs and reasonable attorney's fees (not more than 33%)

Who you gonna call?

3. Yes, Edwards would be my first choice of the three if I needed to sue my employer
Doesn't make him my first choice as president. I'd love to see him take the reigns of the Justice Department.

5. I trust Obama to take my case, given his work as a civil-right attorney.
Unless I think there's a fat settlement coming, I'm not confident Edwards is going to agree to represent me.

6. Edwards has a record of having kicked corporate ass in
the courtroom. I'd be more than happy to have him representing me.

8. Which makes me wonder:
Why would anyone trust their court battle to either of two attorneys with no courtroom experience over one who's got a stellar record in court as someone's advocate?

I don't think we're going to be seeing any reasons for some of those votes.

7. Despite the line from "Ghost Busters", this is not a frivolous question.
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 06:23 PM by Seabiscuit
Bear in mind, you as a U.S. citizen have been severely wronged and injured. You have a choice of 1 of 3 lawyers who you will have to trust to mend our constitution, do something about our healthcare, our economy, our foreign policy, global warming, our jobs, our poor, and our middle class. It's going to be an epic battle, much like a courtroom battle, and you're the plaintiff with the legitimate complaint and causes of action.

And please. Think about the hypo. Don't just turn this into another popularity contest.

9. In my experience it is the people that have needed lawyers
that dislike lawyers the most.

10. The ones that do are generally men who've gone through a nasty divorce
and blame their wives lawyers for everything that didn't go their way.

The others are generally the guilty criminals who blame their lawyers for not pulling off a miracle for them.

I have no sympathy for any of that.

27. Perhaps you missed the 3rd sentence in the body of the OP:
"Assume these candidates are in private legal practice rather than running for President." That means I'm assuming they have the time to devote to the case, which they obviously don't have in their present circumstances.

So... who ya gonna call?

15. Can't solicit
( thus no name etc )but personal injury Trial work is my specialty.... and a noble one at that. So, if anyone wants to know why I'm an Edwards fan, I know what fighting insurance companies and corporations is like, from everyday experience.

They can't be trusted. Oh, you better be a FIGHTER; it's the only way you win!!!!

16. Yo!
I'm recently retired from being a trial lawyer. Although my practice over the years was not limited to personal injury cases, I also know what fighting insurance companies and other corporations is like, and I stand together with you. Edwards is the ONLY lawyer among our candidates with real trial experience, and it's easy for us to understand that he knows what it is to be a fighter and stand up for us against such powerful entities. If only everyone in America had our experience - Edwards would be a shoo-in to the White House. If only...

33. Oh, look
Mr. doom and gloom stopped by. My law partner would do a better job in the Civil Rights arena. You don't just go from being an in house kind of lawyer to TRIAL LAW. Plaintiffs Civil Rights violations is usually a Federal Section 1983 violation of false arrest or excessive force, tried in Federal Court.

Believe me, that wouldn't be Obama's strength.
