Schneider: Some final thoughts – two different strategies
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/

Here’s some quick post-debate thoughts:

John Edwards got himself back in it — he showcased his style and his key issues, and is clearly back in the game. He showed he continues to deserve to share a debate stage with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, and voters here will likely give him another look after tonight.

The debate showcased the remarkably different primary strategies of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. She's going for the partisans that have historically constituted the overwhelming majority of primary voters. This is clear over and over again in her language, every time she talks about "fighting Republicans."

Obama, on the other hand, talks a very different game — he repeatedly said tonight he can forge consensus, and will work with Republicans.

Clinton's strategy of going for the partisans in the primaries has shown itself to be a winning one time and again. But this election season has been anything but normal — and it's possible that after eight years with one of the most partisan presidents in history, even partisan Democrats want a consensus builder.

Clinton is running as the anti-Bush, while Obama is running as the un-Bush. Which will primary voters prefer?

1. yet, doesn't Hillary have a track record of reaching across the aisle?
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 12:14 AM by amborin
she forged agreements with the likes of Newt Gingrich, for example

some articles have suggested she's demonstrated skill at consensus building

Primary voters should prefer the guy who is against corporations ruling our government.

11. I'm with you

Till John Edwards came along, I used the same avatar you're using because of the stolen elections. They're all a bunch of crooks. I also believe that Edwards is the guy who will finally fight the system when the Rethugs steal Election 2008.

4. Bill Scneider is really trying to make a silk purse out of sow's
ear. Is that what Obama is doing?

Out here we have the Appeasing Democrats cave to GOP so often, this
just is not inspiring.

To see Hilary show some passion is inspirting to me.

7. anti bush is anti republican and obama wants to sing songs
with them. HRC will present legislation that will benefit all americans and that means in republican districts and it will hard for the republicans to vote against her legislation......

Listen, hrc the democratic president can get passed all her legislation and if I were hrc I would after this election and the senate adds about 5 to 7 more democratic senators i would call all of them down to the white house and tell them since the republicans were going to use that 50 plus one majority vote to name federal judges we will see how they will react on my budget and if they play that old song and dance of cloture, then I want you_________ whomever is the majority leader to bring before the senate that same legislation that bill frist was going to do and pass it and then get things done for this country only democrats can bring them....

Oh and one other thing I would call joe liberman down to the white house and ask him if he is going to vote for our policies or are you going to side with the republicans. If you say you do not know then I will pick this phone up while you are sitting there and call the majoprity leader and tell him to strip you of any and all chairmanships, and then tell Joe, I really appreciated the friendship all these years but Joe i cannot have you against us.....

12. Talk about naive
"it will hard for the republicans to vote against her legislation......"

It will be a matter of pride for Repubs to vote against Hillary. THey won't care whom it benefits, so long as it's anti-hillary.

8. Yes, and as long as Obama declares himself a "Proud Christian"
and invoked Jesus' name, he will win the bible crowd, especially in the South.

9. I dunno. I read here that invoking Raygun will win him Nevada. Union people
didn't seem inclined that way. I wonder if Dems in the South aren't as tired as me of the Bushco rhetoric... we'll see.
