Edwards courts Dean's top chiefs
Courting supporters of former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, Sen. John Edwards held a conference call Saturday afternoon with some of Dean's top organizers in a dozen states. Among those who took part were Chip Carter, the son of former President Jimmy Carter, and Eric Schmeltzer, Dean's former press secretary in New York.

Schmeltzer later told reporters he is trying to convince other Dean backers that Edwards is the best hope for keeping Dean's message alive.

1. Dean is real. Edwards is fake. The carry-over just isn't there.

3. Dean's message wasn't about Dean, and he's keeping it alive.

4. Frog went a courtin' he did ride
Uh-hmm, Uh-hmm
Mister frog went a-courting and he did ride
A sword and pistol by his side
Uh-hmm, Uh-hmm.

He went down to Missy Deanie's door
Where he had often been before.

He said, "Missy Dean, are you within?"
"Yes kind sir, I sit and spin."

He took Missy Dean upon his knee
And said "Missy Dean, will you marry me?"

"Without my Uncle Rat's consent"
"I wouldn't marry the pres-I-dent."

Uh-hmm Uh-mmm

(apologies to Nick Cave and anyone else you doesn't like a little satire)

6. This is unlikely to work, since Dean's people will want jobs with Kerry
They may love Edwards but they have to feed their kids like everybody else.

8. I got to listen to that call
There were hundreds of people on it, and John Edwards was very good. He said that he didn't agree with Governor Dean on some issues and he realized that not all Dean supporters would be able to support him. However, he was committed to building the type of grassroots effort that Dean was trying to build and knew the importance to bring ordinary people back into the democratic process (I'm paraphrasing a great deal). He came across as very sincere, very likeable and very charismatic.

Of course, although I agreed with Dean about the war, I was on board the Dean campaign before it so it wasn't the defining issue for me.
