EXCLUSIVE: Obama Rips Bill Clinton Slams as 'Troubling' and Inaccurate

January 20, 2008 4:03 PM

ABC News' Michael James and Tahman Bradley Report: Sen. Barack Obama says he's ready to confront former President Bill Clinton, calling his advocacy on behalf of his wife's presidential campaign, "troubling."

In an exclusive interview with ABC News' Robin Roberts to air Monday on "Good Morning America," Obama, D-Ill., directly engages Bill Clinton on a series of issues.

"You know the former president, who I think all of us have a lot of regard for, has taken his advocacy on behalf of his wife to a level that I think is pretty troubling,” Obama said. “He continues to make statements that are not supported by the facts -- whether it's about my record of opposition to the war in Iraq or our approach to organizing in Las Vegas. This has become a habit, and one of the things that we're gonna have to do is to directly confront Bill Clinton when he's making statements that are not factually accurate."

Obama apparently refers to Clinton’s comment that it was a “fairy tale” that Obama has consistently opposed to the Iraq war from the start, and that Nevada union officials backing Obama were strong-arming members into caucusing for Obama.

26. All they need to say is "how pathetic, this is politics"

If Barack wants to take on Bill Clinton, all good and well but he needs to remember something, Bill has taken bigger beasts than Obama. The political graveyard is full of people who crosed Bill Clinton and regretted it.

Any man who walked out of his Presidency with a 62% rating after they tried to finish him off by the republican smear machine knows how to fight.

The phrase i think you are looking for "biting of more than you can chew"

82. You know, Bill Clinton only won when he told the truth, and he's been lying about Obama.
Now do you do when people start telling lies about you? I mean, what's the right thing to do?

Of course, Obama's going to have to tell the truth when other candidates lie about him.

Once you're tired of spin and ready for a message of substance, read a little of this speech by Obama.
It is a message of unity that all of us can learn from, and it brought me to tears to read it.

2. Brilliant move going after a guy who isn't running...
...and is still probably the most popular Democrat in the world.

Yeah - that won't be seen as petty AT ALL.

Did he just wake up yesterday and realize that Hillary was the first lady to a two-term President? Of course he is running against both of them - did he expect Bill to remain neutral?

63. I would say that Bill hasn't lied but the MSM and Obama supporters
have repeatedly accused him of lying, distorted what both he and Hillary have said, and if Obama has said that either Bill or Hillary made certain statements I would check the facts first. A lot of what Obama attributes to statement by Bill and Hillary are really paraphrases or framing of thier statements to make people believe they said what is being reported. The first mistake by the Obama team was to make a big deal out of HC saying that it took a President to get the civil rights legislation through. The Obama camp jumped on the MSM bandwagon by casting that statement as an afront to MLK. It's been down hill ever since.

It is tragic, because Latinos, Hispanics, and African Americans could have used this election to build a political alliance that would have had much power in the face of their advasaries. I fear that it is much too late in the hate HC and BC game to pull things together. HC supported Obama in his run for the Senate how did things get so out of whack?

My hunch is that the Obama camp is infiltrated with a few HC haters pluse some very smooth RW-ultra-conservative neocons who want to kill the political careers of both Obama and HC. Right now, they are doing a great job of it. It seems that neither Obama or HC camps understand what is happening.

97. The major lie in question by Bill Clinton occurred on the night of the New Hampshire Primary.
"You (Obama) said that your plan and George Bush's position on the Iraq war were the same," Bill Clinton said that night.

Many people may have believed him, and it was a lie. Moreover, you know it doesn't even sound true. Can you think
of any democrat that would say that in 2004?

Of course, Obama's going to have to tell the truth when other candidates lie about him.
What would you do?

As for the civil rights legislation comment by one of his staff, Obama was quick to make a call to unity.

Obama must tell the truth to counter this kind of an attack, and he is doing everything in his power to keep his supporters
from being divisive.

Please, try to listen to some of what he has to say about unity in our time.

You take on Hillary, you take on Bill.

He's got no morals Obama, he took that potshot today after losing Nevada and he blamed Bill for it and he knows Bill is coming to SC, he took a shot at him to try and take the wind out of Bill's sails in SC.

He dragged Bill in with that sneaky hit of "reagan changed the trajectory of america unlike Nixon did or
Clinton did".

He took a potshot that angered Bill. I'd be pissed if I was Bill too.

20. That was the second attack on Clinton - backfired. The first one involving MLK
or fairy tales also backfired - angering civil rights activists (you know , those guys invested in the fights of the 60s and 70s) - and he had to take that one back. Someone saw him on TV yesterday taking the Raygun thinghie back too - dunno on which show.
let's see how Obama vs Big Dog round 3 will end up - this is quite enjoyable:popcorn:

39. Well, compare 1980 to 1992...
Reagan brought in a shit-storm--so much so, that Tip O'Neill and the dems rolled over and had to "work" with him. Clinton co-opted republican stuff like increased defense spending and welfare reform to get the hostile congress to work with him.

Obama never said the Reagan "revolution" was a good thing. He never bowed down to Saint Ronald. But the Reagan wave did happen. There was no Clinton "revolution" Even Clinton had to in his words honor the Reagan view of limited government in his policies. Even Clinton had to respond to the Reagan demonization of "welfare mothers" and others distortions about the poor with welfare reform. Historically Obama was correct.

The Clintons have said similar comments about Reagan over the years, acknowledging his influence as Obama did.

So Obama is getting a real bad rap on this Reagan issue. A large part of it manufactured indignation in my view.

desperate. His vitriolic comments and his over-the-top anguish, signify that
this is his Presidency too.

He can't stand it that he might not win. This is as much his Presidency as it
is hers.

He seems to go in panic mode, and shoot off his mouth. It looks like desperation
and fear about not getting what he believes is owed to him.

It's really sad to see such an icon, act like an everyday brat.

115. Most of our Presidents have been big enough men to refrain from manipulating Elections
They didn't use their power as former Presidents to affect the outcome of a race.

They didn't go into the very Caucus sites and actively work to push a candidate.

They respected the People of this Country enough not to unduly influence them.

I guess things have changed.

44. Obama is making a mistake out of desperation.
Bill Clinton is popular, a former President, and baiting Obama to attack him is a trap. I'm going to support whichever Democratic candidate gets the nomination, but objectively, this is a bad strategy for Obama.

46. This is actually pretty slimy if Obama doesn't get specific.
Edited on Sun Jan-20-08 05:45 PM by gulliver
"Obama apparently refers to Clinton’s comment that..."

Apparently Obama did not make it clear what facts he was disputing. That might lead one to believe that he is trying to tie into the "Bill Clinton's just a liar 'cuz the Republicans say so" meme. I.e., yet another right wing meme played by Obama with no facts and no case. And undermining Bill Clinton, our last known good president, is un-Democratic. Obama undermines all Democrats with this line of marketing.

On edit: And of course, packaging the slimy, fact-free, case-free attack on Bill Clinton as a response to an unethical attack by Bill Clinton is classic GOP. It goes well beyond irony into a grossly destructive and dishonest mugging of the truth. Obama must supply specific cases of Clinton providing information not supported by the facts (sneaky way of saying "lying") or Obama has once again let his people make a slime ball out of him--to take the kind interpretation.

It's a shame. You watch the guy come off absolutely brilliant and respectable at the NV debate and then he pulls something disgusting like this. It has to be desperation. Otherwise there is no excuse. And, of course, there is really no excuse anyway.

I think there will be huge amounts massively offended in the democratic party that a junior senator of 3 years is taking huge potshots at who is probably our greatest Democratic President and brought us the WH for 8 years out of the last 30.

That what it boils down too, the bloody nerve of it.

75. I've made that point here. Bill & Hillary win by distracting voters from Iraq.
Bill's continued personal attacks against Barack keep grabbing the news headlines and it serves to keep the public distracted from Iraq and the crimes.

But, when Barack starts swinging at Bill, we will see the cowards calling for peace once again.

However, I think Barack has had it with their crap, KoKo01. He has nothing to lose anymore. The race card that the Clinton continued to have their operatives play has really done a lot of damage. Why do you think black women moved from Hillary to Obama? That was the most impartial demographic group there was and probably fairminded.

Your point is a good one. But who benefits from diverting attention from the Iraqi War? Obama or the Clintons? Everyone knows the answer to that one.

Did you notice how they "SHUT DOWN" the coverage of Bush's NINE DAY PEACE TRIP to the ME...? His performance was so ludicrous and Imbecilic those Arabian Horses to Saudi (US $$$$$$$$$$$$$ Investment),Prince Alaweed's Desert Palace where Bush looked at the Prize Falcon's and took one on his arm and gazed at it in his Chimp Fashion (like the TG Turkey they bring to him at the WH and he pardon's it in FRAT BOY GLEE every year)...but anyway...Jeanne Moos on CNN had ALL THE SNIPS of the IMBECILE CHIMPEROR!

FRAT BOY P-RESIDENT NEPOTISM! ARKANSAS WELLSLEY & GEORGETOWN, YALE NEPOTISM...vs...WHAT????

Meanwhile Hillary and Obama "spar" over the "leavings" of the Democratic Party......Yeah...it's a good thing...OBAMA or HILLARY... SAME THING...SAME THING.........VULTURES...
