Poll question: If Joe Lieberman (or any centerist dem) Was A Woman, Would He Be Doing As Well As Hillary?
Edited on Sun Jan-20-08 02:24 PM by Magic Rat
Considering Joe's record on women's rights is about equal to Clinton's, I'm curious if anyone think that if Lieberman was Joanna Lieberman instead of Joe Lieberman, would he get the same turnout among women voters that Clinton gets?

Or is it just something about Hillary?

If he were running in this primary, and he was a she, would the now-Ms. Lieberman get the same level of support as Hillary.

(this would be assuming Hillary wasn't running in this election)

2. Hillary Clinton does not equal Joe Lieberman.
The comparison is not valid or fair.

Joe was a very solid Dem in pretty much his entire voting record right before he went off the deep end with the Iraq war.

10. I just use Lieberman as an example
You can take any Democrat not firmly in the liberal camp - like Evan Bayh or Jim Webb.

And I say not firmly in the liberal camp because you can't deny that for the past seven years here, Hillary hasn't exactly been DU's favorite senator.

24. Then why start an OP like this? You're asking the same question, just framing it differently
The question being, "is it all just because of her gender?" And to be honest, I think that the idea of having a Clinton back in the white house is much more appealing to voters than her gender.

25. because it is a different question
The question of race or gender as a qualifier can be the main issue, or it can be the whole issue. But Hillary is in a much more unique position than Obama because Hillary is - yes, a woman - but she's also the wife of a former president, who, still, after 8 years out of office, is still the de-facto spokesman for the party.

That makes her a unique candidate for a number of different reasons. But the reason *I* personally hear a lot of, when it comes to her support, is the fact that people would really really like a woman president.

So I framed my question around that idea, that if any other male politician were suddenly female, would they have the same level of support as her.

Asking if Obama was white would he have the same support is an equally fair question, but it's not the same, because I'm not taking anything away from Obama.

I'd be asking the same question if I said, if John Edwards was black, would he be getting the same support Obama has.

And to be honest, I don't think that's true.

I think Obama being black has helped him get attention, but ultimately he's had to sink or swim on things that have nothing to do with race - like eloquence or the ability to connect with people who, up until a few months ago, probably had never heard of him.

19. I expect.....
Karl Rove has begun taking notes. Who says you can't teach an old cur new tricks. He's probably sending a thank-you note as I write. Thanks for the constant affirmation, and reassurance that my support of Clinton is the correct choice.
