Connecticut Favorites:Clinton And McCain
Edited on Sun Jan-20-08 02:02 AM by Nutmegger
Republican John McCain and Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton hold double-digit leads among likely voters in the Connecticut presidential primaries on Feb. 5, according to a poll commissioned by The Courant.

McCain's rise is a dramatic turn in a state where former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani was the favorite last fall before fading in the early decision states of Iowa, New Hampshire and Michigan.

After being widely written off last year, McCain now is preferred by 39 percent of Republicans, compared with 16 percent for Giuliani and 11 percent for former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, according to the poll by the Center for Survey Research and Analysis at the University of Connecticut.

In the Democratic race, Clinton is favored by 41 percent of Democrats, compared with 27 percent for Barack Obama and 9 percent for John Edwards. One in five Democrats is undecided, an audience Obama is trying to reach with television ads that began Saturday.

For those of you interested.

Here's the link to Obama's ad that is talked about in the article.

3. Clinton is a tri-stater, but McCain is a bit of a surprise.
You'd think Mayor Nine One One would have a leg up, really.

I guess Lieberman's association with Obama (the mentor thing) ain't helping him there. That's a big promise he's making in that ad about health care--cut costs and COVER EVERYONE? That's news from his previous stance...

5. I'm not surprised about Clinton, but am about Rudy.
Edited on Sun Jan-20-08 02:28 AM by Nutmegger
The last poll the Courant did, Rudy was the Repuke leader. He use to be brought up in political conversations and the local media but he has fizzled and McLame took his place. Word has it that our governor will endorse McLame soon, but I haven't seen anything in the press to verify that. I know her husband is a McLame fan.

Obama really hasn't caught on here. I attend one of the four state universities and from my conversations with many students, they seem to favor Clinton over Obama with a good bunch undecided/don't care.

6. I'm thinking they're getting a bit tired of Rudy's Lith-ping bullshit!
And they're probably realizing he isn't REALLY a "national" figure. I know he scurried down to FL to try to gin up some love amongst the Snowbirds...but good luck with that!

CT does have that "slightly stodgy" thing working--I mean, look at Lamont v. Lieberman. I honestly thought Lamont would pull it off initially, but there's that RESISTANCE to "too much change" going on there...

7. After 9/11 he doesn't have much.
Edited on Sun Jan-20-08 02:51 AM by Nutmegger
My mother was thinking about Rudy but then one day she asked me "Did you ever notice that everytime he speaks he brings up 9/11?" It's going to be funny if Florida blows up in his face!

I predicted that Lamont would pull past Lieberman by a few percentage points. I guess the phrase "The Land of Steady Habits" is and apt description of my state.

People are tired of the old Nahn Wun Wun song and dance.

9. She most certainly is!
She's more to the center than I, and often looks at Repukes but she definitely doesn't like what she sees. Even a few Republicans in my family have said they will vote Democratic in the primaries. They are throughly disgusted!

Nice chatting with you MADem. Have a nice night. :hi:

10. My mother, sisters and the four kids who vote are in the minority
They all support Obama. And one of my sisters says that she thinks Fairfield County where they all live, will go for Obama on 2/5.
