Smart politics by the Obama camp: They are minimizing their NV loss
by pushing the "We won more delegates" meme, which although true, doesn't change the fact that he did lose in NV.

They are creating the impression that Hillary's win is not really a win, and if it is, it is a very close one.

Smart politics by Axelrod & Co.

1. Not really. They would have been better off to say it was "close." They blew it.

2. It's smart for his supporters
so they don't feel so bad that he lost a second state.

5. It's smart in the sense that the media
will push the meme by reporting, or even by debunking it. It's perception.

22. The media is saying Obama's WRONG. That's not "good" for him.
The media is saying the NV Dem Party Chair is "correcting" Obama.

Which is true considering how far behind her he was up until a few weeks back.

18. Do you realize what country you live in?
You ask your average American about John Kerry and they will tell you he's an American Idol participant.

People pay little attention to details. They hear soundbytes and read headlines. Perception is everything.

30. I'm telling you how things are, and why politics relies on half-truths.
Your camp does it. Mine does it. Everyone has done it because they know people only care about what they hear or see, not on what the truth is. Look at Bill Clinton talking about voter supression by the CWU.

10. it is smart politics
the point is to minimize the damage for the next 48 hours, until coverage of South Carolina starts to heat up Monday night after the football games end.

Then it becomes a whole new ballgame, pardon the pun.

The delegates will NOT be calculated until Feb 23 & NOT by the method that Axelrod claims.

14. the more delegates meme is not true
and, as more Nevada State Officials start publicly asking "why is he saying that? we don't decide until April!", he'll look like a sore loser or a bad liar, neither of which is good for inspiring a sense of confidence in one's ability to practice the New Politics of Hope and Change he often speaks of.

It would have been better if he would have congratulated Hillary and moved on to SC.

15. Well, the Democratic Party in NV is saying WTF???
I have no dog in this fight, I have no idea how NV does their halfassed calculations, but here's the latest:
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/thefix/2008/01/clinton_won_or_did_she.html
Delegate Math: Who Won Nevada?
********

UPDATE, 8:15 p.m: Both the chairwoman of the Nevada Democratic Party and a senior adviser for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign are insisting that the contention that Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) won more delegates in today's caucus is incorrect.

"The calculations of national convention delegates being circulated are based upon an assumption that delegate preferences will remain the same between now and April 2008," said Jill Derby, the chairwoman of the state party. "We look forward to our county and state conventions where we will choose the delegates for the nominee that Nevadans support."

Howard Wolfson, communications director for Clinton, echoed that sentiment. "Hillary Clinton won the Nevada Caucuses today by winning a majority of the delegates at stake," he said. "The Obama campaign is wrong. Delegates for the national convention will not be determined until April 19."

19. Just like next Saturday the Clinton camp will minimize their SC loss due to all of those "blacks"
I've no problem with Obama anticipating that move and jumping ahead. Particularly after that classless move on Clinton's part, by claiming a victory in Michigan.

unclear whether or not it will work yet. Apparently the NV Dem party is calling them on it, so we'll see what happens.

25. What is the Caucus for, if not to award delegates?
Sure, Obama won't get a big bounce out of it, but neither will Hillary.

I think this is a big thing.

31. He didn't lose
Delegates are the way you win or lose primaries and Obama got more. However losing the popular vote will of course hurt him and give Hillary a minor boost.
