Huckabee gave speech to white supremacists
Source: The Raw Story

As South Carolina's Republican primary election draws nearer, Mike Huckabee has ratcheted up his appeals to the racial nationalism of white evangelicals. "You don't like people from outside the state coming in and telling you what to do with your flag," the former Arkansas governor told a Myrtle Beach crowd on January 17, referring to the Confederate flag. "If somebody came to Arkansas and told us what to do with our flag, we'd tell them what to do with the pole. That's what we'd do."

Making coded appeals to white racism is nothing new for Huckabee. Indeed, well before he was a nationally known political star, Huckabee nurtured a relationship with America's largest white supremacist group, the Council of Conservative Citizens. The extent of Huckabee's interaction with the racist group is unclear, but this much is known: he accepted an invitation to speak at the group's annual conference in 1993 and ultimately delivered a videotaped address that was "extremely well received by the audience."

Descended from the White Citizens Councils that battled integration in the Jim Crow South, including at Arkansas' Little Rock High School, the Council (or CofCC) has been designated a "hate group" by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

In its "Statement of Principles," the CofCC declares, "We also oppose all efforts to mix the races of mankind, to promote non-white races over the European-American people through so-called "affirmative action" and similar measures, to destroy or denigrate the European-American heritage, including the heritage of the Southern people, and to force the integration of the races."

14. Add in his Christian Reconstructionist ties as well
http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/2008/01/huckabee-extremist-by-tristero-just-as.html

Just as I suspected, Michael Huckabee has close ties to Christian Reconstruction, the far right theocrats whose ideas I blogged about during last year's Blog Against Theocracy:
Back in 1998, when he was still serving as governor, he helped write "Kids Who Kill," a short book purporting to analyze the outbreak of school shootings by teenagers. His coauthor was George Grant, a well-known militant Christian reconstructionist author, activist and educator. That same year, the libertarian Reason magazine published an exposé of reconstructionism titled "Invitation to a Stoning," which identified Grant and quoted him on the movement's ambition for "world conquest." Scorning the moderation of other conservative Christians, Grant explained, "It is dominion we are after. Not just a voice ... not just influence ... not just equal time. It is dominion we are after."

Of course, Huckabee must have had no illusions about Grant's baroque worldview, since it is clearly reflected in their book. The school shootings were mere symptoms of American civilization in decline, they thundered, with communities "fragmented and polarized" by "abortion, environmentalism, AIDS, pornography, drug abuse, and homosexual activism." (Unlike his coauthor, Huckabee was too nice to call for the execution of gays. He merely wanted to place them in detention if they tested HIV-positive.)

And this is for starters. Salon also published today a round up of Huckabee's connections to far right christianists. It's a sobering list.

21. See No Evil....... a list of office-holding politicians who have appeared at CCC events since 2000
What follows is a list of office-holding politicians who have appeared at CCC events since 2000 and their responses to requests for comment. Not included are dozens of mayors, county sheriffs and other lower-level officials. Also not included are politicians who no longer hold office or failed to win election.

The list was derived from reports in the CCC's tabloid Citizens Informer, and most of the politicians who responded to requests for comment confirmed those reports. Thirteen of the 26 officials on this list refused to comment despite messages that were left, in each case, at home, work, political office and via E-mail.

22. Huckabee - the Diviisive Presidential candidate
This is exactly what I mean. A supposed christian who subscribes to the ideals of racism while invoking the name of God to influence the electorate. On it's face it looks weird but hidden beneath this kind of character lurks something more sinister, more dangerous. He's telling people he can be a president to all people even those that use hateful platitudes, even those who would do harm to people of color, people who fall outside of the lines of Christianity and to wit these people are his flock as well. How did he remain Governor? People now see Huckabee as a part-time bigot for personal gain. He can't thump his chest to preach to us while he does something so egregious as to go to what amounts to a klan rally as if this is what God would want. Or does he feel he's above God's harshest judgment? He is supposed to be championing all that is good, all that is right, and fair and just. If he's pursuing the presidency, I think most people believe he would be doing so because the president should be an honorable person, someone who is law abiding. I don't think hatred is good. Does he? I'm now struck by how dumb Huckabee and Paul really are. They sound great when you listen to them speak but their words ring hollow. They are the mirror images of what is really wrong with America. Divisiveness in all sectors of our society. These politicians want to divide America and will stop at nothing to keep it divided against itself. They say one thing to one constituency and say another to another group who will listen. This is why I like Obama's message. It speaks to inclusion. It seems Mr. Huckabee doesn't really believe that inclusion is part of God's plan.

32. "The heritage of the southern people?"
What might that be, pray tell? Of course, being from Mobile, AL originally, I feel that anyone north of Montgomery is in "the north", and realize that the coastal band of southern counties and parishes are an entirely different beast than the rest of "the south." There's at least seven distinctive southern cultures - South Floridian, Gulf coast, Atlantic plains, Appalachian, Kudzu belt, Texan, Cajun, and urban.

The only thing Dingleberry got right here was with calling hte confederate flag "your" flag - as the design we keep seeing was in fact created by the fucking Klan a few years after the civil war ended

44. Actually, this the St. Andrew's cross with the 13 stars was the battle flag of R.E. Lee's ANV.
The Klan types loved it, and it was featured in Birth of a Nation, rather than the actual various iterations of the ever-changing "national flag" of the CSA.

I think there are a lot more than 7 Souths, myself! There are probably a dozen Alabamas alone, and as many Tennessees as well!

NC has a lot in common with RI, i.e., an island of sanity surrounded by two oceans of conceit, and I am an FFV and FFNC before there was a Carolina, so I can talk ill of Ole Virginny, but only to Southerners. Whenever a person brags of Puritan or Mayflower heritage, I always say, "I'm sorry, but you don't have to be ashamed of it, you can't help from where your people came!"

B. Condone Sodomy.

Fucking hypocrites to the very last one, even their supposed Evangelical ministers. Sorry, my grandmother was a very devout christian women, I can not even imagine her thinking something like that, let alone say it, no matter how you say it comes out the same when pictured in the mind. Do they have a sound bite of that statement. If so, it should used in an audio visual commercial or add. While he is making the statement, they should show someone bent over with their pants down while someone is shown shoving a flag pole with the confederate flag on it up that persons ass. See what kind of reaction you would get from that. Just sayin' what people would be visualizing in their minds.
