Mike Huckabee the Theocrat (tracking the facts)
http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=6dc_1196613297

OK... first of all, watch that (it's funny).

ANYWAYS... this humorous bit becomes less humorous in the context of policy making or public affairs.

Let's track this theocrat's actions and words a bit more seriously (feel free to add items and SOURCES):

1. He explicitly says God is responsible for his rise in polls (and power):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSQNSlUUoOc

2. He explicitly says Prayer is responsible for his rise in polls (and power): “I’m saying that when people pray, things happen." He said this in response to questions about statements in #1 above. "He credits the prayers of supporters to 'have gotten me this far, when there's no way that the limited resources we have had should have me in contention role for first place.'" http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2008/01/17/2008-01-17_mike_huckabee_plays_up_charm_in_sc-1.html

3. "I have opponents in this race who do not want to change the Constitution,"
Huckabee told a Michigan audience on Monday. "But I believe it's a lot easier
to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living
god. And that's what we need to do -- to amend the Constitution so it's in
God's standards
rather than try to change God's standards so it lines up with
some contemporary view." http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/01/15/579265.aspx & http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onHkywYc_1M

4. Evolution. His waffling back-pedal to suggest his response was only a testament to his belief in God doesn't fly. He explicitly said he doesn't believe in evolution itself and dancing around rhetoric of faith doesn't change that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4Cc8t3Zd5E & http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-BFEhkIujA

5. Chuck Norris. "National Bible Curriculum." Huck's primary endorsement http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlaWbCbZhAA

6. Regarding divine intervention at national (youtube) Debates: "When you stand before the assembly, give no thought to what you shall say for the Holy spirit will give you the words. That was, I think, a real breakthrough night for me," he said. "I felt like the Lord truly gave me wisdom and responses that were truly needed at that time." http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2008/01/17/2008-01-17_mike_huckabee_plays_up_charm_in_sc-1.html

7. Huckabee... the christian leader. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xn7uSHtkuA (the cross). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjtGgfhKIvo (christian leader).

1. If Chuck Norris loves him, then I love him.
Yes, I'm kidding.

Gov. Huckabee appears ready for a pretty good evening in South Carolina, which is likely encouraging for his supporters in the fundamentalist community and not very encouraging, IMO, for the legacy of our Founders.

He's frightening and smug and IMO, dangerous.

His GOP opponents have been handling him with kid gloves so far. If he wins SC tonight, my guess is those gloves come off.

2. A Huck win in South Carolina is the best thing that can happen
for us...........fragmentation , infighting , dirty tricks........all weakening the republican's effort....you are right, the gloves will come off then..........but don't be frightened for the country...he's not dangerous.....he has not a chance........his exaggerated antics will eventually show even the sleeping American electorate that he is a lunatic.............the longer they all stay in the running , slashing at each other , the better it will be when the general election comes......hell I say let rooty win Florida.......for even more of the same confusion .

4. I'd rather see people emerge based on ideas and voter excitement (for both sides)
I can't really get excited about the GOP being torn apart either.

In the end, USA needs more people on all "sides" who take interest in their own government and are not alientated.

That said... I'd rather see somebody win the GOP nod who blows off the religious right, so that maybe they will finally go make their own party.

5. Hi, Essene. (I love your screen name, by the way.) The GOP is up against
a wall of its own making.

They pandered after the fundie vote for some time now and here is Gov. Huckabee, risen like a spectre, haunting their judgment.

He'll attract a fierce % of GOP primary voters who frankly have nothing better to do than hope his ascent to the Oval Office is a prelude to End Times, while the GOP "moderate" figures recede into history.

They are quite a long way from Chuck Percy, from Lowell Weicker, from Pete McCloskey. Percy's dead, I think, and Weicker and McCloskey are independents now. The stink was too much for them and they had the good sense to get out.

If the GOP wanted to squeeze us at the polls in November, they'd nominate John Danforth / Rob Portman. That would be a tough ticket to turn back.

If Gov. Huckabee continues to gain support and arrives in Minneapolis with a negotiable number of committed delegates, he's in the catbird seat, even if they deny him the nomination. He'll have sufficient support then to decide who will be the nominee and what priorities will be set in the platform.

Scary stuff.

3. What a nutjob this guy is!
Edited on Sat Jan-19-08 12:44 PM by polichick
One minute he says unborn children should have the same rights as everyone else ~ and the next minute he says gays shouldn't have the same rights as everyone else. His proposed amendments are contradictory when it comes to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" (which he always mentions).
