Early this morning, MSNBC's Mika Brzenzinki (Morning Joe show) made a fairly long comment about pronouncing Nevada correctly, including showing the Michele Obama faux pas where UN-R students booed her when she mispronounced our state, although Mrs. Obama quickly recognized her error and turned it into a positive.

Mika even said "since Joe is not here today, we can pronounce Nevada correctly."

you're right, to be honest. I know the correct pronunciation of Illinois but I never really thought about how to say Nevada. I would say it the same way as Mrs Obama (did originally) so maybe I'm biased.

I think it's a tough one - how far do you change your accent to sound like the locals?

For example if I were in France - I might say it with a short 'a' but the French would say it with a long 'a' like Fraance.

If in doubt though you're probably right to try and say a placename like the locals to be polite.
