Obama receives BIG money from Yucca Nuclear Power Lobby for Presidential Bid..
"Illinois state Senator Barack Obama had two opportunities to engage in a discussion on SR0342, but he remained silent. And he remained silent until 30 OCT 2007, when for political reasons the aspiring President informed Senators Boxer and Reid that he believed "the time for debate on this site is over."

"But what of the two opportunities he had to debate the Yucca Mountain resolution he and the Illinois state Senate adopted with unanimous consent in April 2002? "

"Was not April 2002 the time for vigorous debate on President Bush's recommendation? Hillary Clinton certainly thought so."

"Obama, on the other hand, did not, for it was not politically expedient for the Illinois state Senator to oppose George Bush and the nuclear energy lobby of Illinois. After all, his bid for the Presidency was not yet on the horizon. And besides, Obama would have to rely on Illinois special interests such as Exelon, the atomic energy giant that donated $74,350 to Obama in 2004, in order to raise funds for his US Senate bid. But even more troubling is the $181,000 Obama has accepted from Exelon for his Presidential bid."

How can Obama protect Nevadans from the nuclear power lobby when http://www.nei.org/newsandevents/exeloncampbellaward/">he is financially beholden to the special interests who desire to dump their radioactive toxic waste at Yucca Mountain?

Senator Obama is the more pro nuke of the big three. It is a deal breaker with me. I welcome being proved wrong, cause this type of pollution, we don't need, and I want to be right about my choices. I have watched the senator slowly evolve his public position gradually towards the left , from his origional center stance. Believe me when someone says nuclear power plants I pay attention.

Edwards, unfortunately is not allowed to run seriously. I would relish the green debate rather than "your mother is a poopoohead" type stuff .Sadly , Hillary's public position feels more in line with the peoples' opinions of nuclear, at least in Calif, and most likely Nevada.

9. Your post is stupid on its face.
You do realize that Exelon is a large employer in his home state

You do realizse that coprotations fo not give contributions to political campaigns.

You do realize that Nuclear scientiset and engineers are well paid and typicall have considerable disposbale income..

You do realize that the amount anyoe can provide on an individual basis is $4,600 meaning that the smallt number of exewlo employess involved here mugh be about 40...... and the maximum is about 320 (since the campaign only has to report contributions totalling at least $500 in a company that has tens of thousands of employees.

Your post is stupid on its face.

"Obama received an additional $86,000 since 1998 from Exelon's political action committee, employees and predecessor, Commonwealth Edison. Obama got money from the company in his 1998 bid for the Illinois state Senate and for his failed 2000 congressional campaign. Exelon also donated to Obama's PAC and his successful 2004 U.S. Senate bid."

Fact Check: Hillary Clinton Attacks Obama on Yucca But His Record of Opposition is Consistent and Clinton Has Taken Contributions from The Nuclear Industry

January 17, 2008

OBAMA HAS CONSISTENTLY OPPOSED USING YUCCA FOR PERMANENT NUCLEAR WASTE STORAGE

Obama Sent A Letter With Durbin Saying That There Should Be Local Veto Power For Nuclear Waste Dumping. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported, "When he was in Las Vegas in March for a health care forum, Obama told The Associated Press he opposed the repository and would look to regional storage as a solution. Surely that could not have meant keeping the stuff in Illinois, where much of the nation's commercial nuclear waste is generated. On June 30, 2006, Obama and Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., wrote a letter to Sen. Pete Domenici, D-N.M., who at the time chaired a key energy subcommittee. 'Senator Obama and I want to make it clear to the chairman that any plan to create regional nuclear waste sites without any local veto power is unacceptable,' Durbin said at the time. 'Illinois must not become a dumping ground -- even a temporary one -- for nuclear waste brought in from other states.'" (Las Vegas Review-Journal, 5/15/07)

Obama Spokeswoman Said That States Shouldn't Be Burdened With Others' Waste. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported, "The Obama campaign said Monday the candidate did not accept money from Exelon's lobbyists. Spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the letter shows Obama 'doesn't believe any state should be burdened with storing the waste from others as long as the state has a storage site to deal with its own waste.'" (Las Vegas Review-Journal, 5/15/07)

Obama Wrote "I Have Always Opposed Using Yucca Mountain As A Nuclear Waste Repository." In 2007, Obama wrote, "I want every Nevadan to know that I have always opposed using Yucca Mountain as a nuclear waste repository, and I want to explain the many reasons why I've held that view. In my state of Illinois, we have faced our own issues of nuclear waste management. There are some who believe that Illinois should serve as a repository for nuclear waste from other states. My view on this subject was made clear in a 2006 letter to Sen. Pete Domenici, who at the time was chairman of the Senate Energy Committee. 'States should not be unfairly burdened with waste from other states,' I wrote. 'Every state should be afforded the opportunity to chart a course that addresses its own interim waste storage in a manner.' That is a position I hold to this day when it comes to both Illinois and Nevada." (Obama Letter To The Editor, Las Vegas Review Journal, 5/21/07)

3/23/07: Obama Said He Was Opposed To Plans To Build A Permanent Nuclear Waste Repository At Yucca Mountain. The AP reported, "Obama said he was opposed to plans to build a permanent nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas. The senator, whose home state has the most nuclear reactors in the nation, suggested he might support regional dump sites." (AP, 3/23/07)

JUDGE MIKVA: 80 EXELON EMPLOYEES DONATING TO OBAMA DOES NOT "SOUND LIKE A KEPT POLITICIAN"

Former Federal Judge Mikva: "There Even May Be 80 Or So Employees Of Exelon Who Are As Discontented With The Company's Public Policies." Abner Mikva wrote, "In short, the story shows that some 80 or more employees of Exelon gave individual contributions totaling $160,000. Where the other tens of thousands of Exelon employees have made contributions, if any, is unknown. (There even may be 80 or so employees of Exelon who are as discontented with the company's public policies, as am I, and based their contributions on such fact). The Obama campaign had more than 100,000 contributors in the first quarter of this year; more than 50,000 of those contributions came through the Internet, and the average of those Internet contributions was less than $25. Does that sound like a kept politician?" (Chicago Sun-Times, 5/14/07)

CLINTON HAS TAKEN THOUSANDS FROM NUCLEAR POWER PLANT OPERATOR NRG ENERGY AND NRG CEO DAVID CRANE IS A BUNDLER FOR THE CLINTON CAMPAIGN

Clinton Has Accepted Thousands In Contributions From NRG Energy Inc., Which Is The First Company To File An Application For A New Nuclear Power Plant In The United States Since The Three Mile Island Accident; Clinton's Position On Nuclear Power Has Confounded Critics Who See A Contradiction In Her Opposition To Yucca But Not To Expansion In Nuclear Power. "At a South Carolina town hall in February, Clinton expressed concerns about waste disposal but noted that 'nuclear power has to be a part of our energy solution.' Clinton has accepted thousands in contributions from the nuclear industry, including nearly $80,000 in this election from employees and a PAC of NRG Energy Inc., the first company to file an application for a new nuclear power plant in the United States since before the Three Mile Island accident. Critics see a contradiction in Clinton's opposition to a facility to store nuclear waste, but not to expansion of nuclear power, which would generate more waste." (AP, 11/13/07)

David Crane, The President And CEO Of NRG Energy, A Nuclear Power Company, Has Raised At Least $100,000 For Clinton And Made A $4,600 Contribution. David Crane, a "Hillraiser" for the Clinton campaign, is the president and CEO of NRG Energy Inc. Crane donated $4,600 on March 31, 2007 to Clinton's campaign. NRG Energy Inc. is the first company to file an application for a new nuclear power plant in the United States since before the Three Mile Island accident. (Center for Responsive Politics; AP, 11/13/07; White House For Sale)

NRG Energy PAC Donated $10,000 To Clinton's Presidential Campaign. NRG Energy PAC donated $5,000 on 3/23/07 and $5,000 on 3/24/07 to Clinton's campaign. (FEC)

NRG COMMITTED MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO THE CLINTON GLOBAL INITIATIVE

NRG Committed $5 Million To The Clinton Global Initiative In The First Year And $175 Million Total. (Clinton Global Initiative)

OTHER NUCLEAR ENERY COMPANIES HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO CLINTON'S CAMPAIGN

Nuclear Energy Institute Consultant Donated $1,000 To Clinton's Presidential Campaign. Simone Hannah, a consultant for the Nuclear Energy Institute donated $1,000 to Clinton's campaign on 9/27/07. (FEC)

Entergy Corporation PAC Donated $2,500 To Clinton's Presidential Campaign. Entergy Corporation PAC donated $2,500 to Clinton's campaign on 11/27/07. (FEC)

Entergy Corporation PAC Donated $$3,920 To Clinton's Senate Campaign. Entergy Corporation PAC donated $1,000 to Clinton's campaign on 2/1/01, $1,000 on 2/14/01, $1,000 on 3/17/05, $420 on 11/14/05 and $500 on 7/13/06. (FEC)

General Atomics PAC Donated $2,000 To Clinton's Senate Campaign In 2006. General Atomics PAC donated $2,000 to Clinton's Senate campaign on 3/23/06. (FEC)

CLINTON ONLY RECENTLY CALLED FOR ACTION ON YUCCA MOUNTAIN AND NO PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE

Clinton Justified Previous Inaction On Yucca Mt. Issue, Saying It Was "A Waste Of Time To Ask Questions" To The "Republican-Controlled Congress." Hillary Clinton recently called for congressional hearings on the proposed nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain. This move sparked criticism due to her failure to attend 2 previous hearings on the issue. Clinton said it would have been "a waste of time to ask questions" in the Republican-controlled Congress and that" no matter what questions were raised, there was a very strong momentum that the administration and their Republican allies in Congress... to move forward on Yucca." (Las Vegas Review-Journal, 7/30/07)

Senator Questioned Clinton's Opposition To Yucca Nuclear Repository Because "She Was Missing In Action" For Repository Hearing. Senator James Inhofe, R-Okla., challenged Hillary Clinton's promise to "not go forward" with the proposed Nevada nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain because she failed to attend 2 nuclear waste hearings held by her committee on Environment and Public Works. Senator Grey said: "When Senator Clinton had the opportunity to ask 'hard questions' of administration officials about Yucca Mountain, she was missing in action." The Clinton team said her absences were because of "important Senate business on behalf of her constituents, and issues of national importance." (Las Vegas Review Journal, 7/26/07)

If thats what you call research, propagating Obama's pap...To us it's called the Fox guarding the hen house. It just doesn't cut it when you need a finer point on the pencil.

The research in the OP is independent and impeccably done..not so much with Obama's random PRO-fact check!

"Obama also had the opportunity to oppose the nuclear waste facility at Yucca Mountain in 2002, when the Illinois state Senate considered an instrument entitled Illinois State Senate Resolution 342 on 18 APR 2002.

"According to the synopsis, SR0342 "Urges Congress to sustain President Bush's affirmative decision on Yucca Mountain's suitability as a permanent federal repository for high-level radioactive materials."

Although Obama was present when the bill was considered on the floor of the Illinois state Senate, he did not voice any objections. As a result, SR0342 was adopted with the unanimous consent of Barack Obama and the entire Illinois state Senate. I quote the relevant passages on page 26 of this transcript of the proceedings of the Illinois state Senate:>

24. Washington Post source here
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/01/18/for_both_clinton_and_obama_nuc.html?hpid=topnews
While Obama called the ad misleading during a campaign stop Thursday, his financial ties to Exelon appear to be inescapable. A cursory search of his campaign finance report shows 158 contributions from people who identify themselves as Exelon employees, totaling more than $150,000.

But Obama's not the only candidate wading deep in a pool of contributions from the nuclear energy industry.

Clinton has received $68,650 in 34 contributions from NRG Energy, and the company's chief executive, David Crane, is listed as one of her Hillraisers -- meaning he has brought more than $100,000 in contributions into the campaign. The Clintons' ties to the New Jersey-based power giant run deeper than that, though. The company committed $5 million to the Clinton Global Initiative in 2007, according to the web site of the charity run by former president Bill Clinton. The company's six-year commitment is $175 million.

33. Hillary has adamantly opposed a Nuclear Repository at Yucca Mtn since 02'
which I think makes a valid model for how corporations "should" be treated..putting the good of the people first rather than the present model of corps buying favorable congressional votes. The difference between Hillary's position of speaking out against and Obama standing back without uttering opposition to the Yucca Plan should be obvious even to the cursory observer.

67. I think there are so many different viewpoints and quasi reasons
for posters being here.. Some I think are just college student. Some who are just partisan because it's the thing to do momentarily and they really haven't clue what is at stake for our democracy. They don't consider the backstory of a hidden power struggle being waged by the Republicans, because they've never been interested in politics until now and never studied US History.

The one thing they have in common are the drive by incendiary/derogatory remarks as divisive but required of them if they are to be included in their clique.

25. And you seem to be the winner. Gotta love google. Lots of facts found.
It is a position she has maintained for many years. Indeed, she voted against the authorization of the development of a nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain on 9 July 2002. She also issued a press release after she cast that courageous vote.

Obama also had the opportunity to oppose the nuclear waste facility at Yucca Mountain in 2002, when the Illinois state Senate considered an instrument entitled Illinois State Senate Resolution 342 on 18 APR 2002. 53. All he had to do was speak up for discussion.
Illinois state Senator Barack Obama had two opportunities to engage in a discussion on SR0342, but he remained silent. And he remained silent until 30 OCT 2007, when for political reasons the aspiring President informed Senators Boxer and Reid that he believed "the time for debate on this site is over." But what of the two opportunities he had to debate the Yucca Mountain resolution he and the Illinois state Senate adopted with unanimous consent in April 2002? Was not April 2002 the time for vigorous debate on President Bush's recommendation? Hillary Clinton certainly thought so. Obama, on the other hand, did not, for it was not politically expedient for the Illinois state Senator to oppose George Bush and the nuclear energy lobby of Illinois: his bid for the Presidency was not yet on the horizon, and Obama would have to rely on Illinois special interests such as Exelon, the atomic energy giant that donated $74,350 to Obama in 2004, in order to raise funds for his US Senate bid.
But even more troubling is the $181,000 Obama has accepted from Exelon since he announced his Presidential bid. How can Obama protect Nevadans from the nuclear power lobby when he is financially beholden to the special interests who desire to dump their radioactive toxic waste at Yucca Mountain?

46. To me, behind that brilliant smile...theres a cold, calculating, unconscionable human being..
For the unprincipled ruse he's inflicted on this country, when even his friend John Edwards is fed up with him, is very telling. There is more to Obama's psyche than meets the eye..and it's beginning to grow malevolently everyday.

59. Basically, Obama's job is to upend Hillary as the nominee..
the Republicans do not want to face her as the Democratic nominee because she will begin destroying all they've worked to accomplish over the last 8yrs. So, they've hedged their bets with Obama. If Obama wins the nomination, Republicans will breathe a sigh of relief knowing he is a Democrat in name only, unprincipled in Democratic values and their agenda will go uninterrupted for a minimum of another 4yrs. At least that is the way I see it.

61. I agree after what I've been reading about him. Not a real big surprise though
because even after he became a Senator I was disappointed in some of the things he did or did not back. I had thought he was much more liberal than he turned out to be. The only true liberal is Kucinich, but we need to move left of center a bit before he can really run. He won't be able to be heard until campaigns are publicly funded. I really wonder if that will ever happen. The media will make billions this election year I heard. Once in motion the cycle will be hard to stop. The average person probably doesn't even know what campaign reform really means and how it will empower the people again.

65. Hillary admires Kucinich..
even though she knows his chances of election are nil. I believe if she is elected she will find a position for him in her administration. You've got to Love his passion and unwavering principles as close to the (Constitutional elements of the) Founding Fathers as it gets.

I've gone a bit further in an analysis here, in case you've missed it:

62. Exactly..
and why he mirrored Hillary's vote so closely fending off future attacks on his record by the Clinton camp. If anyone thinks Obama just decided in Feb/07' to make the announcement for a run at the presidency, they are sadly mistaken. I would venture a guess he's been groomed for this time at least since he's been at Harvard. Republicans strategize usually in windows of 5-10 yrs. Reagan's SOTU Address was the jump off point for the Republican's creation of PNAC and their dream of perpetual control of American politics.

It's obvious Obama is their designated water bearer and his mission is (1) Thwart a Clinton/Democratic presidency, (2) Become their homogenized version of a Republicat, (3) Continue eroding the Constitution until it's a meaningless piece of paper, (4) Complete a Federalist takeover of the Courts ultimately nullifying The Bill of Rights; focusing entirely on promoting The New World Order and Global Trade and completion of their Project for The Contract with America, as their predetermined way of life for Americans.

32. oh no i read the article
"On June 30, 2006, Obama and Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., wrote a letter to Sen. Pete Domenici, D-N.M., who at the time chaired a key energy subcommittee.

Senator Obama and I want to make it clear to the chairman ---->that any plan to create regional nuclear waste sites without any local veto power is unacceptable,<---------" Durbin said at the time. "Illinois must not become a dumping ground -- even a temporary one -- for nuclear waste brought in from other states."

i guess durbin did`t mean what he said.

43. well lookie here what i found..hillary has a problem?
Clinton has received $68,650 in 34 contributions from NRG Energy, and the company's chief executive, David Crane, is listed as one of her Hillraisers -- meaning he has brought more than $100,000 in contributions into the campaign. The Clintons' ties to the New Jersey-based power giant run deeper than that, though. The company committed $5 million to the Clinton Global Initiative in 2007, according to the web site of the charity run by former president Bill Clinton. The company's six-year commitment is $175 million.

The commitments are not donations to the former president's charity, but promises made by the company to the Global Initiative to spend the money on projects that will "help increase the benefits and reduce the burdens of global interdependence, make a world of more partners and fewer enemies, and give more people the tools they need to build a better future."

That Obama will have to answer sooner or later. The republicans will be asking those questions and more if he is the nominee, and it won't be a "free ride" anymore.

73. There are many nuclear power plants in Illinois, maybe the most in the nation,
IIRC.

Of course they employ plenty of people, but more importantly, if you shut them off now, Illinois goes dark. Right now, the stuff is in cooling pools or dry casks at the plants themselves. Illinois wants to move the stuff outta there once it cools down.

Obama's voting his state by supporting Yucca. You can't really expect anything else.
