Yes She Can! My endorsement of HRC
Okay... I posted this late last night on my blog - I have decided to endorse HRC. DU members who know me know I am a longtime Kerry supporter (as the user name would indicate). It's been a tough choice for me, but I wanted to share my post here, because I think it might add a different perspective. Here's a few quips from the post:

I went to the Clinton event, with a different feeling than I had 4 years ago when I was involved with the Kerry campaign. Today I was an observer, rather than a blogger for a campaign.

Admittedly I have been very interested in what Clinton has been saying on the campaign trail, because I have felt, as I have said here in the past that she resonates with me, as woman.

Since the New Hampshire Primary, I have talked to many women who have told me they are supporting Clinton. Women from all walks of life. Women around the country. The theme among the women I have spoken with is that they believe she is the most qualified, they believe she has the most experience and they feel at this point in time our country needs that experience.

So I listened to Hillary Clinton today with an open mind and an open heart. She started her speech by recalling the ‘92 Northridge earthquake that devastated the Valley. She reflected back on how the Clinton administration handled that disaster compared to Hurricane Katrina and there was a shift in her voice, she softened and was that woman who learned to listen in New Hampshire.

Clinton spoke clearly and never seemed to skip a beat. She knew her stump speech inside and out and she knew the policy she was talking about. The economy here in Southern California has been rocky at best for some time. She was, I thought ahead of the curve weeks ago when she got that is was only going to worsen and she began to call for action. That was the first real hook on the issues for me, outside of her health plan, which I feel is the best of the 3 front-runners.

And I watched. I watched her radiating on the stage. Truly confident with herself and the issues she was discussing. She told the crowd in the room, and those listening outside via the loudspeakers that she is running because she knows “America can do better,” and she wants us “to enter into the future with Confidence and Hope.”

The economy, Clinton told the audience, “has to be the number one issue, because it is where we live.” We live in our homes, we live in our pocketbooks, we live in our day to day existence struggling to put food on the table. She spoke few words but said a mouthful that was loud and clear. Yes, it’s still the economy.

“This election,” Clinton said is “about the people. Your hopes, your dreams.” Which translates into, I get you all have needs and I care. It’s another version of Clinton’s “I am listening” mantra, which resonates with women and people who are struggling to be heard.

And then it hit me. I knew that she could lead this nation in a better direction. I knew that she had the experience, the knowledge, the innate sense and the vision to start fixing the wrong that have been wrought on the American people by the Bush administration. Yes, she can, I told myself. Yes she can.

I believe Hillary Clinton is the right choice for President. I had been leaning in that direction for some time now, but it hit me standing there in the crowd today, that my mind was clear. When the event was over I struggled through the crowd to try to meet her. Thankfully I learned the tricks to working my way through 4 years ago, but unlike my time following John Kerry on the trail and knowing his staff that traveled with him, I was heading up there on a wing and a prayer that I would be able to get her attention and speak with her. Someone was listening.

I reached out to her and she responded. And in those first moments talking to her I blurted out that I had been a blogger for Kerry in ‘04 and had been undecided, but I was clear today — You have my support Senator Clinton. I felt as though a weight had been lifted off my shoulders.

I hope folks will read it all and not be too rough on me! I think each of the candidates would serve our country well and fix the messes that BushCo has created. Whoever the nominee I will jump in, roll up my sleaves and work my tail off to get that person elected.

8. thank you...
I've been leaning for a longtime, if you read my blog. It was a hard choice because I deeply respect JK and worked so hard for him in '04.

I was really glad I got to meet her yesterday, that really sealed the deal, as they say.

Every candidate has some very valuable and thoughtful supporters, and both of you are in that league.

10. That sounds great.
My husband and I were Richardson supporters (We also liked Biden) and haven't decided who to support after they dropped out.

However, we'll vote for the Democrat who gets the nomination, no matter who it is.

12. Welcome.
It took me awhile to think it through as well. One Friday afternoon while standing in my office and thinking about the primary I realized I was holding back my support because I was afraid to invest emotionally.

I knew that all of the pain of the 60s and 70s and the defeat of the ERA would come back into full focus and the male dominated institutions would again make my blood boil and now at my age raise my blood pressure as well. Then I realized if she can keep it going, keep fighting, the least I could do was try to get her back.

That afternoon I sent her a check and a note that no matter what the outcome of her race it was a win win. I told her my hope was that her race would bring awareness to and begin a 21st Century dialog about the unrecognized and ignored sexism in this country. After N.H. I thought it might be starting. Now, I am not so sure.

Again, welcome.

20. Keep the faith
I think she has the best chance personally, which is part of my reasoning. I felt the same about Kerry in '04. I have an 18 year old daughter who's just getting started in her life. I want things to be better for her generation of women.

15. Hillary is fortunate to have you in her camp now KG
You take supporting a candidate very seriously, this I learned about you a long time ago, lol.

I know this is not just a whim or passing thought for you. I know you considered deeply who you can support for President most from the current field of candidates.

Like you I had hoped to be supporting someone for President in 2008 who ultimately chose not to run - OK that wasn't the same person for both of us but the experience is still similar. But the more I thought about the overall strengths and weaknesses of our candidates, and their potential to be the leader America needs from day one, the more comfortable I became with the idea of backing Hillary also. I will be proud to have a woman, this woman, as my President. The more I looked into her personal history the more convinced I became that she will fight for causes that I believe in.

Hillary is not the popular choice among most in the netroots. Sometimes it almost seems like "coming out" of a political closet to admit to supporting her in many online progressive cirlces. Thank you for showing the courage of your convictions, but then again you always have.

19. Not a passing thought at all.
Edited on Fri Jan-18-08 10:10 PM by kerrygoddess
It really did click for me yesterday seeing her in person, after doing a lot of research like you into her history. "Coming out" is an apt description, as I said in the post it was a huge weight off my shoulders to say I support Hillary.

Thank you - I think ultimately it's so important to remember we'll all be on the same team regardless, once the nomination happens. I'd like to see a lot less bashing between the candidates in the midst of getting there. I know, I'm dreaming!

No, I'm serious - I'm new... so I'm sorry for the tacky question, but your "endorsement?" Are you a celebrity, politician, someone?

27. This is nearly exactly what I felt when listening to Bill all those years ago.
I had no idea who I was going to vote for but went downtown to the capital in Columbia, South Carolina, and listened to this new man, Bill Clinton. Suddenly, I saw what he was talking about and I understood why he believed he could fix our country. I voted for him and that man never disappointed me. I feel the exact same way about his wife, Hillary. Both of them get it but I do believe that Hillary is even stronger than Bill was.

Thanks for your story.

30. Hillary had that same effect on me when I was watching her at an event on C-Span.
I was not prepared to like her, infact I was prepared for the complete opposite. Since Biden dropped out, I decided to keep an open mind to the other candidates.

Hillary spoke to me. She spoke about issues that are near and dear to my heart - to my life.

Biden always would say, close your eyes and envision each one of the candidates sitting at the desk in the Oval Office when a crisis came in - and ask yourself, who would you want to be sitting there?
I can see Hillary sitting at that desk more than the others.

I am leaning towards Hillary.
Not quite ready to throw my support to her, but am very happy about her win today in Nevada.

This must've been a difficult decision for you KG.
Thanks for your post.
