Obama childhood pics

with his momma and stepdad

With his maternal grandparents

his momma

class pic in Hawaii

another Hawaiian class pic

Some woman was on Steph Miller's show saying Obama never mentions his deceased mother because she's white and he's ashamed. She seemed to think he should mention the she's white for some reason. Another woman called in to say that he frequently talks about his mother in stump speeches right from the beginning especially in regards to health care. This begs the question....who gives a fuck what color his momma is or why should he have to mention her ethnicity ever?

My own momma is a little bit white but does it matter? It sounds ridiculous to ever have to mention your mother's ethnicity whether it is on a message board or during a political campaign. I for one am glad Obama's not running on the race card.

1. Those are great pics - thanks for posting. He looks like his mother.
That caller is full of crap - a mother is a mother, no matter what color. Just another person trying to keep race in the spotlight.

3. She was saying he could get more votes by telling people this
It's so ridiculous. I can imagine the speech she has in mind. "I see that many of you in this crowd are white. My Momma's white too. Vote for me!" The woman claimed to be an Obama supporter but Steph shot her down because that's just dumb.

2. Obama was a happy little child..
It's all a part of Obama's interesting history. In Hawaii there's multi-heritage all around and I can't wait to get back on the Islands..

Thanks for these pics, IZL!

5. I would also venture to guess that Obama's daughters are adjusting well.
I loved his comment about choosing to run for President. He stated words to the effect that he had an extraordinary wife and two above average kids. I loved it! We've failed our children in the past 30 years by mistakenly treating them like little cult objects.

We all adore our children but Obama doesn't place them on a pedestal above his wife. I admire the implication that his beloved wife, Michelle "comes first" while the children come "always." :-)

6. White or Black, Black or White
I completely agree, why should Obama or anyone identify their color, much less their mother's or father's color. I am white and I am so over the color issue at all, can't grasp why other people aren't. I would be more interested if someone's father was in prison. Someone in his family did something right, he grew up to be a very responsible person, a good father, community leader and husband. So we are concerned about his family? Why? And I've heard him talk about his mother and her illness, I didn't get any impression that he was ashamed of her or his grandparents on either side.

I think his Paternal grandmother is the only one left alive and she is in Kenya. I saw her on an interview the other day and she is smart and delightful.

12. He DOES talk about his mother
Edited on Fri Jan-18-08 10:30 PM by EffieBlack
He has sometimes spoken about how sad he feels that she died so young, never knew her grandchildren and isn't here to share all of this with him.

I suspect that the fact that he doesn't babble on about his mother night and day may be because: 1) he still deeply feels her loss and it is painful to talk about her; and/or 2) he respects her memory too much to turn her into a campaign prop.

John Edwards frequently talks about his parents on the campaign trail - he is obviously extremely proud of them - but he rarely talks about his late son. Certainly no one would suggest that he doesn't constantly talk about his son because he's ashamed of him. Perhaps it's for the same reasons that I believe Obama doesn't constantly talk about his late mother - out of a mixture of sadness at the loss and respect for their memory.

Let's not forget that these candidates are human beings, too.
