Not hard to come up with a southern accent since most of the churches he has attended had southern pastors. Both white and black pastors have and use a peculiar almost-singing vernacular. I have the fundies in mind.

I am black, born and raised California and with a typical western accent BUT when I get pissed, a southern flavour creeps into my words. I can't explain it. My mom was from the midwest, Tulsa Oklahoma and although my father is from thet deep south,(South Carolina), he has no accent to speak of.

I have to wonder if it's a legacy of the Great Migration...

Even in Italy, the Sicilians will speak "proper" Italian in public and use Sicilian at home. Just like with US blacks (and hispanics and southerners, etc) the homespun dialect immediately marks you as an ignorant serf in the eyes of the ruling class.
