May I interrupt this pissing contest to introduce an issue?
"We need to bring to a close this sad chapter in American history, and begin a chapter that passes the might of our military to the freedom of our diplomacy and the power of our alliances. And while we are at it, we can close down Guantanamo and we can restore habeas corpus and we can lead with our ideas and our values.”
-Barack Obama, Richmond, VA, May 8th

3. Darned good quote.
We do have three leading candidates. All are bright, well-qualified people who have chosen to enter this political meatgrinder.

Maybe if we stood back and just let them do the talking and infighting we might be better off.

8. This place is getting to be so sad.
:-(

I've been here for quite awhile. I have felt happy to be a part of DU, lately not so much. By the time November rolls around there may not be much left. I was feeling very excited about this year until the last few weeks on DU. Now I am utterly depressed.

16. it really is sad -
these are only the primaries - life and death is the general election.

I am doing everything that I know to personally, physically get my own (and I am not naming names here) candidate votes in the PRIMARY.

If he/she does not win the PRIMARY - I will still vote for the Dem on the GENERAL ELECTION ticket.

There will not be any other choice.

In the meantime, my beloved DU seems to have become a nest of vipers. I mostly stay at the SMW - it still offers information and humor.

and I have to say - it is the best daily thread on DU

Clinton's Guantanamo
How the Democratic president set the stage for a land without law.
By Brandt Goldstein
http://www.slate.com/id/2132979/

The Clinton White House justified this atrocious conduct in terms that sound strikingly familiar today. Justice Department attorneys maintained that foreigners held by the United States at Guantanamo Bay have absolutely no legal rights, whether under the Constitution, federal statutes, or international law. According to this logic, the Clinton White House was free to treat the detainees however it pleased. (There was some plagiarism here. The Clinton folks took this argument from the Bush administration lawyers who'd first defended the camp.)

The article talks about when Guantanamo was used to hold refugee Haitians, but if Bill kept the camp open to hold refugees, can we trust Hillary to release people accused of terrorism?
