Ames, Ia. - Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards launched a 36-hour "marathon for the middle class" here Tuesday in his final campaign swing in advance of the Thursday presidential caucuses.
Edwards hammered away on his themes of fighting special interests and standing up for workers on issues such as universal health care, a better trade policy and a higher minimum wage.
"Corporate greed is destroying the middle class, destroying American jobs, and it is stealing your children's future, just as sure as I'm standing here," he said to applause from a crowd packed into a ballroom at Iowa State University's Memorial Union.
Edwards was planning to cross Iowa in the dead of night and meet with supporters in Atlantic at midnight, with another group in Creston at 2:15 a.m. today, and arrive in Centerville in time for breakfast. He will travel through eastern Iowa and finish with a rally featuring singer John Mellencamp in Des Moines today.
"We hope for the next 36 hours all of you will be as energized and focused as we are," the former North Carolina senator said. "There's so much at stake in this election here."
Answering questions, Edwards disclosed that he has already put together a list of possible running mates should he win the Democratic nomination. Any candidates "would have to actively be prepared to step into the presidency" should he be unable, and "have to have the same vision for America that I have," Edwards said.
