Edwards' 'Mudcat' gives tasty dish on Clinton

John Edwards most colorful adviser let fly today with complaints that Hillary Clinton”s campaign is already trying to spin its way out of a possible loss in Iowa.

Dave “Mudcat” Saunders told a van full of reporters that he'd just been sitting in his motel room, watching a Clinton official downplay the importance of the Iowa caucuses.

Saunders expressed outrage. "I threw a cup of tea at my TV, I was so mad,” he said.

He pleaded with national reporters not to let Clinton get away with saying Iowa is unimportant if she loses the caucuses. “She”s from New York. She ought to know “if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.”

Clinton's Iowa campaign, asked for comment, chose not to respond.

Edwards, who is an underdog nationally, has focused his campaign on Iowa. He hopes to win the Democratic caucuses and pick up national momentum from that victory.

Saunders punctuates his points with profanity and speaks in a thick Virginia drawl that's even thicker than his boss's North Carolina speech. He advises Edwards on rural issues, and he is a favorite with the press. He got on the campaign”s press van after reporters spotted him in a parking lot and begged him to ride with them and brighten their morning.

As the van got rolling, Saunders joked at length about the amazing size and talent of the campaign team Clinton has assembled in Iowa. “They”ve got everybody but the Third Marines out here,” he said. “They”re like the (naughty word deleted) New York Yankees,” he declared.

3. I met Mudcat the other day and he is so much fun.
I could have talked to him for hours. I like an occasional f bomb and he just lets it rip.

Behind that accent and rough exterior, is a very brilliant man.

7. And he seems genuine and honest.
the hillary camp is really disgusting and their pre-election spin on Iowa is part and parcel of their continued use repub play book tactics, the exact methods Hillary decried in the early debates. I wonder, will this be her mantra too when she loses in New Hampshire to either Obama or Edwards? What about south carolina? I wonder when, if ever, she'll be gracious enought to concede and lend her support to another candidate. I believe that all of the other candidates will but will she? Something tells me that her campaign will not take losing well and will blame the media, the other campaigns, etc. instead of taking the blame herself.

13. I like Edwards but that guy "mudcat" is a real douchebag
I'm really tired of these "colorful" characters, these professional hicks who deliberately go around talking like fuckin Gomer Pyle to impress the Ivy League educated press corps. And I can't believe the press eats that shit up with a spoon. These reporters are so unaware of the truth of life in the "heartland" they profess to love and trust so much they think an asswipe like "mudcat" is the real thing.

To me if somebody goes around talking and acting like a dumshit, it's probably because he in fact is a dumshit. that hillbilly crap went out with Hee Haw and nobody's impressed with it anymore. Well, except maybe our outstanding press corps.

14. I haven't heard much from Saunders, but I liked him in "For the Country"
A video made by the Edwards campaign - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG0iw9ujcU4

His comes across as well-informed and caring.
