Chelsea Clinton brushes off a 9-year old in Iowa
Well Chelsea didn't inherit Bill's warmth and charisma, that's for sure.

VINTON, Iowa — It’s one thing for Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign to turn down interview requests for the candidate’s daughter, Chelsea. But can’t a 9-year-old reporter catch a break?

Sydney Rieckhoff, a Cedar Rapids fourth grader and “kid reporter” for Scholastic News, has posed questions to seven Republican and Democratic presidential hopefuls as they’ve campaigned across Iowa this year. But when she approached the 27-year-old Chelsea after a campaign event Sunday, she got a different response.

“Do you think your dad would be a good ‘first man’ in the White House?” Sydney asked, but Chelsea brushed her question aside.

“I’m sorry, I don’t talk to the press and that applies to you, unfortunately..."

Serious question. I've never heard her talk...ever...not even one syllable. You'd think she'd give a little speech for Hillary or something. She's not a kid anymore.

56. Yes--my daughter did.
During her study-abroad semester in London, my daughter went down to visit Oxford. Chelsea happened to be there at the time. Becky and her friends spotted Chelsea and asked to have pictures taken with her. Chelsea was charming and friendly, and the kids got great pictures with her.

I think Chelsea's statement could be read as a sign of respect. The child was a reporter, not just a child, and Chelsea treated her as a reporter.

11. Okey doke.
Despite my low post count, I was lurking since before the 2004 campaign. This primary, as it is played out on this board, is fucking nasty in terms of guilt by association and personal smears (which I characterize the OP). There is so little discussion about substantive differences between the policies of the Democratic candidates that DU is becoming less a political discussion board and more like a supermarket tabloid.

Some say.

have picked unmercifully on any of the Clinton 'surrogates'... which in this case includes Chelsea. Now Chelsea doesn't talk to the press)like Axelrod)and she gets flamed for not talking. Which do you guys want?

John Derbyshire, contributing editor, The National Review: He called for the death of Chelsea Clinton when Chelsea was pretty young.

Rush: Called Chelsea a dog over many days broadcasts.

Either you want the 'surrogates' to talk and you'll leave them alone...lr you want them not to talk and you'll leave them alone.

Yeah, it's been a crude crowd in here, many of them opinionated newbies.

19. To be honest...
Your use of the phrase "Hillary Haters" is as shallow as this story. It employs the same kind of logic that has been used against those who have opposed Bush and his policies. I.e., "Why do you hate America?" For the most part, and especially on Democratic board, folks don't "hate" Hillary (or Edwards, or Obama), we just don't have the knowledge, due largely to our shallow gossip mongering corporate media, to express opposition to policy intelligently. Besides, it is so much easier to toss some mud during the commercials than it is to turn off the TV and engage in substantive debate.

And, quite clearly, Hillary has isn't the only one who has been the target of vapid political discourse.

35. They ARE "Hillary Haters, "Hillary Bashers," etc.
They aren't people who don't like or disagree with Clinton's views, votes, record, etc. There is a HUGE difference. The former are repulsive and have no place here, the latter aren't repulsive and are great posters, even when I (sometimes violently) disagree with them. Some of teh posts are as bad as anything on FR.

I heartily dislike Obama, but I neither start nasty threads about him nor bash him. And, I will support him if he wins the no,inations, despite my dislike of him.

93. So immature and so counter-productive....
Edited on Mon Dec-31-07 11:56 AM by earthlover
For one, many of whom are called "Hillary Haters" have been people who simply disagree with her. I have actually seen people been called a "Hillary Hater" for posting a poll that showed Hillary slipping! And this IS so similar to the Bushies who called people Bush Haters and asked why do they hate America.

And, I suppose there are some folks who are Democrats who actually don't like Hillary at all. Well, it is a free country, and they are free to their opinions.

Here's the problem....and you illustrated it so well. When you say they will be leaving the Party and you actually cheer this....can't you see that having people leave our Party is going to make it more likely for us to lose? Put another way, more likely for a Republican to win. So it is nothing to cheer about when people leave the party, even if you want to massage your egos and not have to listen to their criticism here anymore.

Hillary has done nothing to alleviate this problem either. Her campaign has taken a decidedly negative tone, with personal attacks, fear mongering and mud slinging. This is not something that increases turnout, it is designed to lower the turnout for her opponents. Problem is that we want a high turnout in November from Democrats, and pissing off people about the race is not going to help there at all.

So go ahead and bask in the silence of people leaving the party if you want. But the silence could be the calm before the storm.

All this being said, I don't think people should be making an issue of Chelsea at all. If she doesn't want to answer questions from a student, that is her prerogative and not a campaign issue.

60. Why did the OP disgrace themselves?
If it's a true incident, it needs to be discussed. A couple months ago, Senator Obama wasn't going to take any reporters questions, apparently ... but he did take the time to answer the questions of a young girl reporter.

Was he wrong to do so? Should he have brushed off the child? Was he being a cad for only speaking to a child?

I think this is a learning opportunity, if it did happen. I believe child reporters should be treated a little differently than adult reporters. If that means setting up special news conferences for child reporters, so be it. Children form opinions, too, however. Why not ensure that those opinions -- and the feelings that will follow them for the rest of a child's life -- are good ones?

The poster you're referring to is either a) feigning concern in an attempt to put more mileage on the story, or b) naive, innocent, and a bit befuddled as to why derision is being heaped on the OP.

Five bucks on the table for the correct answer. I'm going with B, 'cause I believe in goodness of man (riight..... squared).

but then, Chelsea is not the candidate. Perhaps she should have taken the child by the hand over to her mother, the candidate.

Chelsea is no Axelrod, no surrogate shooting her mouth off.

Lots of posters have echoed this sentiment and pointed out the difference between what Obama did and what Chelsea did. Chelsea was correct.

**addenda: Long before there were Hillary-Haters on this board, there were all the various references to Hillbots, Hillarybots, and so on ad nauseum. That is why I used the term Hillary-Haters. What else can one call flamebaiters attempting to wipe out one of our most viable candidates?

'Cute' is not substance.

Telling a child that a question about her father as potential male First Lady is off-limits, telling a child that any questions the child has is off-limits because Chelsea doesn't speak to any reporters -- *that's* substance.

Why would anyone encourage someone not to speak to a child reporter? How could things possibly go wrong? The child means no ill intent.

If it did happen, however.... what then?

46. The kid was a correspondent for Scholastic news. I'm appalled at you.
You never got Scholastic news in your school? I remember, long long ago -- back when dinosaurs ruled the earth, the 80s -- a Scholastic News type paper was the first place I saw an Asian American holding a national position of importance, newswoman Connie Chung. Connie Chung fascinated me, and represented something good and wholesome to me. To see an Asian American woman as national newsanchor, and to have that Asian American newswoman feel that school children like me were important enough to talk to through a little national school newspaper... that was an awesome feeling.

It doesn't matter if Chelsea Clinton told the kid they were cute; what matters is that Chelsea Clinton didn't want to talk to the kid. That kid is now going to report to many other schoolchildren all around the country.

Would you want your child to be told that they may be cute but they're questions and concerns are just not important enough to answer? Would you want to be that child, who now has to deal with the implication that a simple question about how a former first daughter feels about her dad as First Husband is too dangerous to talk about even to a little kid?

Face it, Chelsea Clinton blew off a little kid, over nonsense. (Or was it nonsense?) That kid was not paparazzi, and was not seeking to take her down or her parents down. If this is how the Clintons see the rest of us, there is no reason to support them.

55. Do you mean, serious replies aren't expected here?
even for subject matter one may deem 'trivial'?

I'm someone who does not consider brushing off a child trivial, nor do I consider 'you're cute but' an acceptable brush off to said child. I do believe in the importance of making good impressions upon children. Children look up to adults, learn from adults, idolize adults, hate adults. When you think back to the adults in your life, when you were a child, who are the adults you most remember? Who are the bigger than life adults you best remember? Courtesy should matter.

A child should be handled differently than an adult. A child reporter, and a child reporter's questions, should be handled with extra courtesy and care. I mentioned the Connie Chung story because Connie Chung made a favorable impression upon me as a youth; her presence told me that anyone could be anything they wanted in America, even an Asian American. She wouldn't have done so if she hadn't appeared in that national school newspaper. She would have made a very bad impression if the national school newspaper had reported she did not wish to speak with them.

So I feel for this child, who was dismissed. I feel bad for this child. I feel bad for every child who missed out on being introduced to the Clinton family as people who care about people, even the littlest.

Are you dismissing the story only because of whom reported it, however?

May I ask, from what point of view do you come from this yourself, to deem this entire incident as trivial?

71. It's a question of proportionality
Edited on Mon Dec-31-07 11:19 AM by RufusTFirefly
In the past, I've heard people argue passionately about why wall-to-wall coverage of Michael Jackson's various pathologies was so very, very important.

I'm sure that if Benazir Bhutto hadn't been blown away by heaven knows who that she too would've spoken out about this shameful, shameful treatment.

If Scholastic News has any ambassadors, I think it should recall them immediately in protest.

And Fox News should receive a Pulitzer for its outstanding reporting.

As for me, I refuse to vote for Chelsea Clinton for President.

Oh wait. She's not running for President.

Welcome to DU, Anouka. But please, get a grip.

The Constitution is in tatters, world stability is dubious, global warming is looking irreversible, people are dying because of lack of food, water, and health care, the American middle class is an endangered species, corporate hegemony is ascendant, and you are writing paragraphs about the perceived snub of an elementary schoolkid, as reported by one of the most notoriously biased news sources on the planet (and yet, incredibly, the OP chose to further distort the distorters), a snub not by a presidential candidate but by the daughter of a presidential candidate, a young woman who, for better or worse, would appear to value her own privacy.

Oh, and by the way, mtnsnake was deliberately and rather transparently being sarcastic. As you grow more accustomed to the posters on DU, you will realize this.

97. Scholastic was complicit in "The Path to 9/11" debacle,
"The Path to 9/11" dissed her father.

The question could be taken as being a bit snarky. I don't blame her for not answering the question. I'm not a Clinton supporter (unless she wins the nomination), but they are making a mountain out of a molehill.

HC's rivals use this chance to offer their offspring/family up to being interviewed by Scholastic (or other media outlet)..not even interview, just a single question or 2 at this point would put the Clinton campaign in an embarrassing situation.
For the record, my opinion is not based on an anti-Hillary mentality...it doesn't matter which person's family was involved. And save yourself a click, I have over 4600 posts (4 yrs) listed in my profile so the "oh, low count troll" excuse won't apply here. Yes, I am a Democrat.

For those comparing this to her stay in the WH, I say apples/oranges. She had to be along for the ride back then. Now she is 27 y/o, not 17, not 7, but 27-soon-to-be-28 yr old who is choosing on her OWN to be front and present at political rallies, up on stage, working the crowd afterwards for votes. She is choosing to be a prop, using her previous/current popularity for vote getting. You want out of the spotlight go home, work you day job, stay low profile. Quit playing the martyr role of "the press was mean to my parents 10 yrs ago so now I won't talk to journalists ever again".

I imagine if the news of her refusal to answer the child's questions gets legs and lasts any longer and we start seeing other candidates' families talk to the media then we will see a very orchestrated interview with Chelsea, flanked by her parents in a "tell us the questions ahead of time" setting.

BTW, this wasn't a news item specific to Fox...I saw it first on AP and if you Google the words Chelsea and Scholastic you will find info in overseas media outlets dated Sunday.
