It looks like I'm an Election Judge - but under fairly grim circumstances
Since I'm a precinct chair in a Texas county that went Democratic on the local level in 2006, I was in line to be the precinct's next election judge. Only thing is, we had someone in our precinct who did a lot of election judge work in the past, so yesterday I sent a letter to the county elections office recommending that this other man take the election judge spot instead of me. I also faxed a copy of the letter to the man's wife.

An hour later, the wife calls me up. It turns out that the man who was to succeed me as election judge passed away a week and ago.

She's still a bit disoriented from the death and the funeral, but she's got some support from her friends to make it through the holiday season. I offered my condolences, and she told me to give her love to my wife.

So it looks like I'm going to be an election judge after all. I'm humbled and honored, but a bit sad over how this came to be.

I suppose I'd better get some serious training under my belt. I have some big shoes to fill.
