U.S. Rep. Bobby Scott, D- Newport News, endorsed Illinois Sen. Barack Obama for president on Thursday, telling reporters that Obama is the Democrat most likely to break the 44-year Republican hold on Virginia’s 13 electoral votes.

“I have nothing to say about the others,” Scott said of Obama’s rivals for the Democratic nomination. But Obama “has the best chance to bring the country together” and is “the kind of person who can actually accomplish something,” he said.

Scott, the first black person elected to represent Virginia in Congress since Reconstruction, said race would not be a factor in Obama’s reception by Virginia voters. Obama is trying to become the first black person to capture the White House.

3. He's only "the first black person elected to represent Virginia in Congress since Reconstruction"
He's well-known in VA and brings a solid organization with him.
