This Senator’s Words Should Shock the American Conscience

December 17, 2007 | Filed Under Policy

A Senator betrays the American Spirit and undermines our Freedom and Constitution

This morning I watched CSPAN2 to listen in on Congress as it discussed the issue of warrant-less wiretapping. Senators are intent on overhauling the outdated FISA legislation.

Senate majority leader Harry Reid lifted Senator Dodd’s hold and forced a debate on cloture that would circumvent a filibuster threat by Dodd. The immunity debate will likely have a strong impact on the direction of America as we move forward. As the debate on cloture unfolded, I was shocked at one statement in particular!

Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama said in a derogatory tone:

“The civil libertarians among us would rather defend the constitution than protect our nation’s security.”

Absolutely correct. Too bad a member of the Senate doesn't recall the oath he took to do the same.

6. Hitler said something similar ...

This was how Hitler came to power. He eroded the rights of citizens by citing external threats. These people are fascists. We lived with the cold war for a very long time without the mega erosion of civil liberties these guys are talking about. They want to turn the NSA into the KGB.

10. I don't know about Hitler but Goering said,

"Why, of course, the people don't want war," Goering shrugged. "Why would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece. Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament of a Communist dictatorship."

"There is one difference," I pointed out. "In a democracy the people have some say in the matter through their elected representatives, and in the United States only Congress can declare wars."

"Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country."

11. It is so sad that ...

It is so sad that Goering is right. We have not educated or nation enough to insulate ourselves from this type of attack. Our kids are not taught to lead and reason. They are taught to follow.
