The one place I never thought I'd see
Edited on Tue Dec-18-07 03:05 PM by JTFrog
people coming together to defend Poppy Bush. He's suddenly a great humanitarian and all around well liked guy.

That's it for me. Not even an enema will help this place.

*on edit - I should have clarified: I realize it's only a fraction of DU, but what a vocal fraction they are. It's been rather disgusting to read thread after thread after thread.

1. Don't you know the Clinton's are infallible.
If they say it is good, it must be good.

2. I didnt realize people were coming together
I thought some HRC supporters were defending this. While the rest of us realized that helping a country that got hit with a tsunami is a lot different than repairing our relations with other countries that Poppy's son fucked up.

3. I hope you recognize not all of us think that way, just those who
feel the need to defend Clinton at all cost. I think they're in the minority here, though they are vocal.

9. No, I should have clarified that I don't think everyone
at DU feels that way. I am just amazed at the amount of pro-Poppy crap that I read today.

Yeah, that makes it all better.

16. No, I totally disagree with every aspect of your argument, particularly the Hitler comparison.
You're saying that we simply cannot look at a single act and say, "That was a good thing you did" even though the person is guilty of other "indiscretions".

This is like the hysteria over the security guard at the fundie Church in Colorado -- well, hells bells! She can't be a hero because she lied to her employer once.

Sorry, but I'm not that consumed.

23. Hitler did like dogs and he built some pretty good highways and he
promoted the development of Volkswagens. Poppy Bush did a couple of good things, too - see that is a legitimate comparison - it may not be a great one, but it doesn't have to be great to be legitimate. The point may be exaggerated, but it is the point.

Finding redeeming qualities about GHW Bush is a sickening exersize...Hey, there's another Hitler comparison! :hi:

13. Well, Prescott Bush was responsible for unleashing both upon this world
so I would say a comparison is warranted. And if you counted up the collective death toll of Poppy's CIA, I'm sure it would be a higher number than Hitler's.

Are you disputing the fact that the Bush Crime Family funded Hitler? Or that Prescott Bush and his same partners from Union Bank were the ones who started the CIA, which Poppy was in from the beginning?

25. No, I disagree with comparing Bush to Hitler, and ...
I disagree with extrapolating some fuzzy facts about grandpa right into the lap of Bush. And I disagree that any of this automatically excludes even the remote possibility of acknowledging that Bush's mission(s) with Clinton were worthy of praise.

28. Fuzzy facts?
The son of a bitch had his assets seized under the "Trading with the Enemy" act in 1942, because he continued to profit from Nazi Germany even after the US had officially entered the war. What's fuzzy about that?

8. The reaction was more in response to a specific mission, not to his entire resume'.
We're all aware of GHWB's shortcomings. But, the things he did with Clinton were pretty admirable.

Some of us can separate the man from his deeds. Some of us take his life's work as an entire, inseparable package. I wouldn't give it any more weight than that.

George Herbert Walker Bush was every bit the war criminal his son is.

Bill Clinton looked the other way, and Bush was allowed to skip free and go on to put his son in the White House. And now Clinton has allowed himself to be slapped down by him. Way to go, Bill.

20. Considering how Hitler used the trains, that's not much to brag about.
However, he DID have something to do with creating the Autobahn, which spawned the Interstate Highway System in the US. And the Volkswagen. At least Hitler contributed two worthwhile things to history. I can't think of ANYTHING good that came from the Bush Crime Family.

26. "not entirely successful". You mean the world didn't become a perfect place?
Similar arguments can be made about Farm Aid, the AIDS concerts, and the concerts Gore put together for global warming awareness.

Do we forgive Gore for his not solving global warming with a single concert, or do we compare him to Hitler?

29. I have nothing to do with comparison's to Hitler
So I won't comment on it.

My point is the Katrina relief fund was a bigger mess than what the media would tell you. The person that was the biggest advocate of this collaboration stated it like it was the perfect place.

34. Bullshit! Stop denigrating legitimate charities to defend you Bush Crime Family buddies.
Edited on Tue Dec-18-07 04:56 PM by Benhurst
George Herbert Walker is a war criminal, responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands in Latin America. If comparing him to Hitler for his war crimes (and granted he was not nearly so successful)offends your delicate sensibilities, then perhaps we can compare him to Charles Manson, a man locked away for life for conspiring to kill a mere handful of individuals. Compared to George Herbert Walker Bush, he is a saint.

Farm Aid, the AIDS concerts, and the concerts Gore put together have never to my knowledge been accused of misappropriating, misdirecting or failing to distribute funds.

The funds raised by Clinton and Bush, on the other hand, have fallen under serious criticism and the diversion of some of the Katrina funds to Neil Bush's little education scam was obscene.

12. I think a lot of us throw up at the mere mention
Of Poppy's name.

And as someone who tunes into the Spanish stations, both George W and Bill Clinton were arm in arm at major Mexican and Central American receptions several months ago.

Also, the Paraguay deal that so many of us at DU thought was about the Bushes buying Real Estate so they could escape somewhere without extradition - it actually involved the Bush family buying up a major Paraguyian water aquifer.
