Evan Bayh (D-Ind): Liablility or Asset?
I broke this story in an article on www.blogcritics.org on July 3, 2007. The article, Making Hay While the Sun Shines: How the Power of Influence Influences Power, details how the Bayh family built their fortune on Susan Bayh's ongoing role as a professional director. Of course, this creates at least the impression of a conflict of interest, since Senator Bayh sits on key committees that influence policy crucial to the success of Mrs. Bayh's companies.

On Sunday, Sylvia Smith "broke" this story in the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette. This feature article serves as a signature piece for her, since this is her first report since being elected president of the National Press Club.

This story has huge implications for the upcoming presidential election in 2008, since Senator Bayh has recently endorsed Hillary Clinton, and he is also widely regarded as being on Senator Clinton's short list of running mates.

1. I find him unacceptable as a veep choice.
But it's still only spec that he is. Not to mention that he is lousy assassination insurance.

2. No Dem would win the only state controlled by the KKK and a state BC didn't come close to winning
Edited on Mon Dec-17-07 12:02 PM by skipos
in 92 or 96. So who will he win over nationally? No one that doesn't already support Clinton.

*edit: The KKK did control it. They don't now. I think.

3. Bayh buys into Clinton's notion that corporate money is the voice of the people.

4. Bayh has consistantly supported the main Bush agenda.
In the next election, he should run as a Republican.

6. I can't speak for him on this. However, from the information
that is available to us, Bayh, Clinton, Vilsac and the DLC seem to be swimming in the same waters in Iowa and midwest politics.

7. two things about the J-G articles:
They ran more than 2 full pages of Sylvia vs. Susan - 4 different articles.

They mentioned that several times Susan used her options to buy lo & sell hi on the only day of the year that it would bring the maximum profits, WITHOUT ASKING THE QUESTION, "How did she know that would be the best day of the year, in advance?" In other words, insider trading is hinted at without being specifically accused.

Hmmmm . . .

10. Bayh on the record
voted for the war; voted for and pushed the bankruptcy bill; voted for K-L; voted against the energy bill that removed the welfare from the biggies.

Yesterday, knowing that Bayh is on Clinton's short list and has been making the rounds of the gasbags on behalf of the Senator, I watched Bayh on late edition. The subject was the NIE and Iran. It was like listening to Richard Perle. This is not hyperbole. I swear, it made me sick.

When someone who never seen a minute of war becomes a rabid supporter of more bombs and blood, then you know the meaning of asshole.

11. i'm aware of his record - hostile to my values
i'm approaching this subject more from the angle that he's been touted for years in the media is the ideal, Dem VP choice.

his record helps for a nice, nonthreatening, DLC ticket.

his money issues, just might be a hindrance.

12. On Dec. 12, 2000
I was shocked that the Democratic party seemed so leaderless. Thus I made it my business to work to rebuild the party from within. I've given, I've blogged, I've joined the meetings, I've phone-banked, I've gone door to door. I didn't do that to see the rise of the Bayhs. His interview was beyond the pale.

Unfortunately I doubt that Bayh's financial issues or lack of brains and morals will stop his DLC cheerleaders. In fact, they're probably proud of the man.
