"If you want a sure bet, highly-qualified and honest progressive as president
just work your ass off to draft Al Gore and help get him elected. The deadline to get him to commit is fast approaching."

Dr. John Moffett is an active research neuroscientist in the Washington, DC area, who has published articles on the nervous and immune systems. Dr. Moffett is also the author and webmaster of the political opinion website http://www.factinista.org/

I'd add - can we Progressives, just for once, try not to 'settle' for the lesser of evils.

1. on what basis do you call Al Gore "progressive"?
Edited on Sun Dec-16-07 09:37 PM by provis99
Progressive in the same sense that Hillary Clinton means (ie. where progressive=DLC corporatist). I can't think of anything he stands for that is progressive.

I'm not bashing Gore, I just wonder what's up with so many liberals thinking he's their man.

2. Search my posts ... Google, etc.
I'm getting tired of doing other people's homework for them.

And what exactly are you getting tired from?

15. I do research currently, pro bono, for five n/p organizations
and, I've been doing pro bono work like this for 12 years.

So, excuse me if I occasionally get fed up with questions being raised that could easily be answered by the questioner if they put forth a little independent effort.

Edited on Sun Dec-16-07 11:07 PM by sjdnb
fdon thing is my son's ID sjdnb is mine. If I go to a different machine, sometimes I appear as sjdnd -- other times fdon. I think it might have something to do with cache.

All of the posts in this thread are mine. No matter what ID they appeared under. I was burning an ISO to an install CD on the Ubuntu machine which may explain the fdon thing. And, I'll be burning a Live CD in the near future so you might see fdon... again.

Sorry for any confusion I caused with my posts. And, for future reference, my son rarely posts, it's usually me on 'his' machine. Although, he's gotten more active lately.

6. Liberals and Progressives
are two closely related, but different constituencies of the Democratic Party.

You do know that, right?

26. I just figured people called themselves progressive
because liberal became a bad word in the '80s. That is, they're really the same thing. Or progressive is some kind of "super-liberal". Both terms are pretty nebulous, even though everyone has their own definitions of the differences.

34. Because
he hasn't had to vote on anything for 16 years, so people project whatever they want onto him.

They forget he was a very centrist, moderate, DLC Senator, and as VP, was the point man on NAFTA.

I love Al Gore, but I hold no illusions that he's a major lefty.

3. I would love to be able to say "President Gore", but
I think he pretty definitively ruled out a run for '08 more than once. With the Iowa caucus less than 3 weeks away, it's a little too late to jump in the game now.

BTW, just in case no one's told you yet, welcome to DU. :hi:

4. Gore candidacy
having read what Gore had to say about running, I believe that the only way he will run is as the draft choice of a deadlocked Democratic convention.

This is, of course, a long shot, but I believe it to be possible.

To support this long shot it is helpful

1 to continue to give Gore good press

2 to split the democratic support among the viable candidates/ (this does look to be happening)

I would support it.

10. I contributed to this group
but on second thought the Gore people should support Edwards who is closet to Gore's thinking. If people write-in for Gore that would take away from Edwards/Obama, and give the NH primary to Clinton.

8. I think he ruled out 08 too. Can't say I blame him either!
Do you realize what a mess the next President is going to inherit? I honestly can't think of any Dept, or Division of the Fed that isn't a mess! Yes it was done by design, but it's going to be an astronomical job to fix! Yes I want it fixed, but I honestly already feel a great deal of sympathy for whoever the Dem is that inherits this disaster!

20. Exactly why Gore is our best hope
Do you really think Clinton or Obama have a rat's ass chance of fixing this mess?

It will take a leader who is respected worldwide, who has proven themselves through decades of experience, AND, most importantly, who is morally committed to making the world a better place.

9. I disagree ... I think he's testing the waters
Bill Clinton, Gore among speakers expected at Baptist meeting
Associated Press Published on: 12/14/07
Major political figures from both parties are tentatively planning to come to a conference in Atlanta next month that aims to unite Baptists from more than 30 denominations, organizers say.
Former Vice President Al Gore, former President Bill Clinton and Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Charles Grassley of Iowa, are scheduled to appear at the event, organized by former President Jimmy Carter and others.
.....................................

Given what he had to got through in the 2000 election, no one can blame him for being 'gun shy'. A good man was smeared, slimed, and had the election stolen from him even though he won the popular vote by more than 1/2 a million votes. Just think how you'd feel knowing you did your best and wanted what was best for America, and was chosen by the people, only to have their wishes undermined by the Rove machine, Kathryn Harris/FL election board, and a judicial system that has become just another political tool.

32. You can lead a horse to the starting gate--but you can't make him run.
Al Gore, for reasons of his own, does not even want to enter the gate, much less run. Apparently, he'd much rather be one of those retired racehorses the outriders ride. It's safer for him personally and he gets to control the entire field.

33. Gore's a moderate
He's great on global warming, but that's about it. Besides that, he ran once, let himself be manhandled by the MSM, didn't put up a good fight in Florida, and couldn't even win his home state. Gore's a good man, a great leader on global warming, but he even if he won the nomination, I doubt he could win the presidency.
