Edwards Statement on the Passing of Congresswoman Julia Carson
Edwards Statement on the Passing of Congresswoman Julia Carson
John Edwards for President
Saturday, December 15, 2007

-----
Chapel Hill, North Carolina – Senator John Edwards released the following statement today following the passing of Congresswoman Julia Carson:

"Elizabeth and I are saddened by the news that Congresswoman Julia Carson has passed away. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time. Throughout her life, Congresswoman Carson led with courage and conviction. As the first African American and the first woman to represent Indianapolis in Congress, Congresswoman Carson broke down barriers for future generations of Americans. Elizabeth and I join the nation in expressing our gratitude for her many years of service to her community and her country."

1. She was a great woman, a great representative. For a long, long time
Congresswomen Carson has been the only Indiana representative who "gets it".

We have other Democratic Reps -- all Blue Dogs. Several win elections because they attract the vote of Indianans who vote Democratic because they are still angry about Lincoln freeing the slaves.

2. I heard her speak at the Indiana Democratic Convention
last year. Although not in good health, she spoke powerfully against the Bush cabal and its illegal, immoral, preemptive war on Iraq.
