Romney wept when church ended discrimination
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” today that he wept when the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the Mormons, announced a 1978 revelation that the priesthood would no longer be denied to persons of African descent.

2. He cried because he was happy
Or so the story goes. He was glad they ended discrimination. Sure...

That's his story now. He has been known to change over time as we all know.

3. Romney is a creep in many ways, but let's be fair here:
According to the article, Romney says he wept *with relief*. Let's not misrepresent what was said just because we don't like who said it.

4. This is SO misleading.. did you even read the entire article??
He wept because he was happy, or are you being sarcastic? Either way.. I don't like Romney but I don't like seeing this kind of out of context misrepresentation. We'd have a hissy if it was done to any of our guys.

“I was anxious to see a change in my church,” said the Republican presidential candidate, appearing for the full hour just two weeks ahead of the crucial Iowa caucuses.

“I can remember when I heard about the change being made. I was driving home from – I think it was law school, but I was driving home – going through the Fresh Pond rotary in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I heard it on the radio and I pulled over and literally wept.

“Even to this day, it’s emotional,” Romney went on.

“And so it’s very deep and fundamental in my life and my most core beliefs that all people are children of God. My faith has always told me that. My faith has also always told me that in the eyes of God, every individual was merited the fullest degree of happiness in the hereafter and I had no question that African Americans and blacks generally would have every right and every benefit in the hereafter that anyone else had and that God is no respecters of persons."

Moderator Tim Russert asked if “it was wrong for your faith to exclude them for as long as it did.”

“I told you exactly where I stand,” Romney said. “My view is that there’s no discrimination in the eyes of God. And I could not have been more pleased than to see the change that occurred.”

So I don't get just what you intended the point to be.

11. But if Romney really felt that all people are children of God
why didn't he join a religion that believed it, too?

15. That point made me curious too. I was wondering how the children
of God in Iraq measure up to this idea? Then I wondered if the children of God deserved Joy if they were American's? It just made me wonder about the geographic boundries.

7. Well, I got the sarcasm!
Seriously, the guy is such a liar and spinner that I can see him weeping that he was unhappy, then 30 years later saying it was because he was happy.

Besides, with that stone face, I dont think he actually has tear ducts!

In a way he's more fun to skewer than the Huckster. Huck's so obvious. And he's more personable. Grecian Formula Guy is so every hair in place perfect- and so dull.

He didn't pull over and correct the situation for his own terrorized family pet.

He expects us to believe this?

Bullshit alert.

21. Romney's pathetic
While the rest of the country was either fighting racism or the Vietnam war (or for that matter, fighting to protect racism and continue the war), Romney did nothing but cried. What a weak, pathetic man. Like most corporate Republicans, he stands for nothing but himself.

26. a few thousand, give or take
The church does not track membership by race. Mauss estimates the U.S. black Mormon population at a few thousand, "certainly not anywhere near 10,000."

27. Let's see...1978...only 30 years ago, so I have to ask...
What the fuck is wrong with them?

Seriously, how fucking ridiculous is it that it took them that long to renounce this?

Any person with any credibility would have left that church long before this.

Hmmm. I saw a Romney bumper sticker the other day. In Bay Area, CA no less.

I wanted to pull over the driver and ask her if she was high on crack.
