Am I the only one who is positively thrilled that Schmuckabee is gaining?

I was a little nervous when Giuliani and Romney were leading. Both of them are Republicans who were elected in very large, very liberal states. They obviously have appeal to crossovers and independents.

But Schmuckabee? He only appeals to the conservative Christian republicans which represent 1/3 of that party. Non-religious republicans can't stand him and he can't possibly win with only the backing of Christian conservatives.

So I'm happy. Anyone else?

He's the only candidate who can energize the fundies for one more try. He's also likely to accept the type of advisers who have completely wrecked the economy for working people.

Why could he win? He could win if the Democratic Party doesn't come to its senses and start to play to its own base instead of to non religious Repugs, those mythical swing voters the DLC thinks are the key to winning elections.

Wake up, guys! They play to their base and do very well. You have avoided playing to yours since Clinton won by pretending to be an economic populist, and elections have been close enough to steal.

If "President Huckabee" doesn't scare them into changing their ways, we need to foment a real revolution in our party.

What if it turns out our country is populated by more nut cases than we thought,
and he polls neck and neck with the Democratic nominee, contrary to all expectations,
logic, or common sense?

Whereas our nominee, whoever it is, will have to fight for the votes of those Democrats
disappointed that their own favorite was not the nominee, 40+% of the American electorate
would vote Republican if their ticket were composed of Charles Manson and Jeffery Dahmer.

13. First, you can do so much better than "Schmuckabee".

Second, Huckster (that's 1) only looks terrible if you read DU and related progressive sites. If, like most swing voters, you look at mainstream news sources, you see a Huckleberry (2) who's charming, articulate, compassionate, Christian, and stunningly spontaneous-sounding. Most Republicans talk like they have gristle in their teeth and a Wall Street Journal up their asses. Hunklebee (3) seems quite relaxed and charming on camera and actually has a moderate record as Governor that he can run on in the general election. Before you go chortling about how easy it'll be to drive over Bumblebee (4), you might want to call your kooky Uncle Mort from West Virginia and as him how the guys at the local Kiwanis Club view him.

After McCain, he's the candidate we least want to face down in November.

15. But what I can't understand is why

Most God fearing honest people would be appalled at the fact, that with all the evidence and requests against he let that rapist go and then the guy went on to rape and MURDER. Look at the constant and ever lasting attack against Dukasis about the parole system letting Horton go. And Dukasis wasn't responsible for the program. The state had passed it and he had to let him go. Huckabee paroled him on his own.

17. I think it would be low comedy if he wins the nomination

A presidential candidate who doesn't believe in evolution? That may play to the most extreme of the fundies, but not to any sane voter.

Oh, yeah, and how about "let's kick out 12 million plus immigrants immediately" That won't fly except with the most extreme anti-immigration voter. Not because the anit-immigrants are compassionate, but because they know it's a crazy idea that can't work.

Any one of our Democratic candidates would crush Huckabee like a cockroach. Sure, he comes across as a nice guy until he talks about policy and real issues. Get him into a debate with any Dem candidate and voters will see him as the nutcase he is.

20. I agree that Huckless's rise is bad news for the Repubs. The WON'T let him win, but he's creating

hope in the fundamentalists that they will finally elect a 100% theocrat.

When those people get their hearts broken after the corporatist Club for Growth squashes Huckless, will they kiss and make up with (1) a cultist Mormon who said he was to the left of Ted Kennedy on on social issues like abortion and gay rights or (2) Giuliani who gets divorces like regular folks get new shoes and who lived with gay men in their New York City apartment while NYPD was walking his mistresses dog?

P.S. I don't think Mormonism is hardly any more of a cult than most other religions and I'd happily live with gay men if they let me share their New York City apartment, but I suspect that the sort of knuckle-dragging mouth breathers who vote in the Repub primary don't share my views.

Huckabee is dangerous. He is a full-on fundie nutbar, and he has easily enough charisma to beat any of our candidates. Charisma and airtime is all it takes. Our candidates have neither.

I am considering a temporary switch to the Repiglican party so that I can vote *against* Huckabee in the primaries.

27. Huckabee makes me nervous.....

The trend for the last umpteen years has been strongly in favor of Southern governors: Carter (GA), Clinton (AR) and Dubya (TX). Now, this Southern governor is moving up in the GOP ranks.

We Democrats need someone who'll draw well in the South -- even if he or she can't carry those states. We also need someone who can capture most of the Mississippi Valley states. If you look at the electoral maps in 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004; you'll notice that Bill Clinton pulled in all but one of the Mississippi Valley states in '92 and '96. Gore and Kerry didn't. Huckabee would probably pull Arkansas and maybe Missouri. That wouldn't bode well for the Democrat.
