Tim Robbins: ‘I’m Not Oprah’

By Julie Bosman

IOWA CITY – A silver-haired Tim Robbins stood in the middle of a crowded room here to introduce John Edwards, and got straight to the point.

“I’m not Oprah,” he deadpanned, drawing chuckles.

Mr. Robbins joined Mr. Edwards for a daylong tour through Iowa today, appearing at a public library in Iowa City, to be followed by two more events on the way to Des Moines.

He glanced down at his notes while he talked about Mr. Edwards, the Bush administration and the presidential race. “What does an actor know?” Mr. Robbins said, listing the newspapers and magazines that he reads, the talk radio he listens to and the people he talks to.

Regular people, like nurses and farmers, he said, do not have enough of a voice in the national debate. “Celebrity culture is part of the problem,” he said. “It’s not what I know. It’s what you know.”

Mr. Robbins is the first of two Hollywood celebrities who will accompany Mr. Edwards on a swing through Iowa this week – Kevin Bacon is appearing at similar events later this week. Mr. Robbins recently appeared with Mr. Edwards at a rally in Washington Square Park.

“There is a third person in this race,” Mr. Robbins said. “And I have a feeling that he’ll be pulling ahead of the other two soon. Or maybe that’s because Americans recognize a winner when they see one.”

Mr. Edwards followed Mr. Robbins with an unusually fiery version of his stump speech, and tried out a new line that he introduced on Monday in an address titled “America Rising.”

“The time has come for us to rise up,” Mr. Edwards said. “Not to stand quietly by, but to rise up. We’re taking this democracy back.”
