Obama plays blame game
Barack Obama continues his hard-edged, negative campaign -- against his own staff.

The Obama campaign's response to reports on Tuesday that he had stated in a decade-old questionnaire his unequivocal opposition to the existence of guns -- a different position than he states today -- was to blame it on a wayward employee.

"That was a questionnaire filled out in his first state senate campaign back in 1996 not by Senator Obama but by somebody on his staff that didn't get it cleared," US Representative Adam Smith of Washington, an Obama supporter, said on MSNBC Tuesday evening.

Passing blame down to anonymous staff ranks has become something of a tic for Obama.

snip

And after media attention turned to the "Hillary Clinton (D-Punjab)" headline on a June research memo Obama's campaign produced about Clinton's ties to the Indian-American community, Obama called the "unnecessarily caustic" document a "dumb mistake on our campaign's part and I made it clear to my staff in no uncertain terms that it was a mistake."

We'll see where the buck stops if Obama makes it to the White House.

ouch. i'm glad she hasn't had a chance to review Clinton's staffers yet.. that could be a bloodbath.

1. I have noted Obama's penchant for blaming the people he seems to regard as underlings
who make "dumb" mistakes.

He also did it in talking about the abortion issue with an anti-abortion person.

Does anybody not hold candidates to a degree of accountability without saying "____ did it too!"

mean by a 'figurehead'? He connotes hope for me. If you have a criticism, you should explain why.

30. Obama is an image-based candidate.
Edited on Thu Dec-13-07 01:52 AM by Harvey Korman
He's a great speaker--when he's onstage alone, anyway--and he's done a good job of inventing himself as the embodiment of American idealism that people want desperately to believe in again. But his actual ideas are far from ambitious or inventive, and his debate performances are just so-so. He's missed an inordinate number of important votes in both political offices he's held. And he's perfectly willing to pander to base elements in order to win votes and then use doubletalk to smooth things over. I suppose as a New Yorker I'm immediately suspicious of anyone trying to sell me sunshine, but more importantly, I just don't see him as a leader. He's a product of a political machine that endowed him with rockstar status, which he now uses to disavow any connection to the political machine. To me, that sounds like fakery, not hope.

But as they say on the internets, YMMV. ;)

31. Funny that, but I'm a New Yorker, too. Yes, he's not fared well in
debates, no argument there. Everyone has missed an inordinate amount of debates; it's an unfortunate consequence of the stinky beast they've created that is the 'running'.
What base elements might he be pandering to, pray tell? Is it over and above what every candidate is doing, because that too is the nature of the beast.
And I see him as a leader, welcome him! as a leader, with new ideas, a refreshing, new outlook, an end to the dynasties that will hurt our country. Fresh blood looks refreshing; this man or anyone elected will make mistakes, but I trust he will make good decisions. He has integrity and smarts.
P.S. What does YMMV mean?
And the sandman is about to get me, finally! :hi:

Edited on Thu Dec-13-07 02:10 AM by Harvey Korman
The base element I was referring to in particular was homophobia. But his apparent willingness to accommodate those who want to see more religion in government also makes me a little queasy.

And no wonder New York is starting to suck...so many good New Yorkers have left. ;)

Anyway, g'nite. :hi:

34. That was
awfully nice of you, Harvey Korman! I love my NY and NYers!

PS You wouldn't happen to be a Giants fan, wouldya?

As for homophobia, Obama was boneheaded and pissed off a lot of people, and I'm sorry he made the choice he did, but someone told him which market to go for, and he did. Not much to be done about that by me after the fact.

Anyway, Go Giants (?!)

33. Neither do I. I am really afraid that if he gets the nod things will go wrong.
I can really see him being happy to work with the neocons and calling it "unity" or some crap. I can see the separation of church and state corrupted further for his political gain, and the nation whooped up into a religious fervor that will only be used against him in 2012. If he got the nod, I'd hope he'd prove me wrong. But he just panders too goddamn much. Nothing is real. He's like brand marketing.
