WaPo Poll: Clinton 53%, Obama 23%
Edited on Wed Dec-12-07 06:12 AM by wyldwolf
This poll finds more clear-cut preferences on the Democratic side, where the contest looks very much now as it has since September. Clinton's overall lead is buttressed by very large advantages as the best experienced candidate, the strongest leader and the most electable in a general election. She also has a significant lead on empathy, wider than when that attribute was last tested in June.

Clinton has a much narrower eight-point advantage on honesty and trustworthiness, long a weaker suit for her. And Obama runs evenly with her in one last attribute, being the "most inspiring" candidate.

On issues, again, Clinton prevails with very large leads in trust to handle health care, the economy, Iraq and terrorism alike.

While Clinton leads among both sexes, she again has a bigger advantage among women than men. Indeed, she leads in this poll across demographic groups, including a 13-point advantage among African-Americans, who've been oversampled in ABC/Post polls all year for more reliable analysis.

6. Because Iowa And New Hampshire Aren't The Only States That Get To Vote
I am familiar with the argument that the winner of Iowa and New Hampshire will have momentum but I don't see Joe and Jane Average in Chatsworth, California or Tom and Mary Normal in Erie, Pennsylvania thinking " Obama won the Iowa caucus so I'm not going to vote for Hillary Clinton now..."

We will see in the fullness of time whose narrative is correct...

7. Losing both Iowa and New Hampshire makes it almost impossible to win the nomination.
And, you are wrong if you don't think a candidate gets a significant boost from winning Iowa.

I'm not saying it can't happen, I'm just saying that national polls don't really mean much at this point.

9. Facts Not In Evidence
There's no evidence that she's losing both NH and IA and even if she did many candidates from both parties have lost one or both of those contests and came back to win the nomination or presidency, ergo:

Reagan -80 lost IA caucus

Mondale- 84- lost NH primary

Dukakis -88- lost IA caucus

Clinton-92 lost IA caucus and NH primary

Bush*- 00 lost NH primary

...the two early contests will lose some of their bounce.

16. I didn't say there was evidence she's losing both NH and IA.
I'm saying that any candidate that loses both NH and IA is almost guaranteed to not win the nomination.

The evidence shows that this has been the case over the last thirty years.

11. National polls are meaningless at this point...
The people in states with primaries that are still months off aren't paying attention yet. So it's all about name recognition.

Notice that the polls in the states with the first votes all show a much closer race.

We can only hope the race is closer as a Hillary nomination will guarantee us four years of President Huckabee.

12. "Thermometer" polls are useless at this point
These are 15 separate engagements...fought on 15 separate "battlegrounds" if you will; in each the "political terrain" is different. Thus, this nonsense by WaPo shows their sheer inside-the-plastic-bubble laziness.

Edited on Wed Dec-12-07 01:35 PM by JackORoses
Hillary's numbers are padded with Biden, Dodd, and Richardson's.

Sorry, sHillary, though a National Poll can be manipulated to make it appear like you have it in the bag,
this is a Primary Season, and there are more than 3 choices.

But I can see why this is necessary, what with all the bad news.

Edited on Wed Dec-12-07 01:55 PM by JackORoses
It seems much more Right Wing to manipulate data in order to mislead the public. Don't you think?

the National Poll is the 'blankie' of the Hillarite,
whatever gets you through the night,
it's alright, it's alright

16. (ASKED OF LEANED DEMOCRATS) If the 2008 Democratic presidential primary or caucus in your state were being held today, and the candidates were: (Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Barack Obama, Bill Richardson, Joe Biden, Chris Dodd, or Dennis Kucinich), for whom would you vote?

http://abcnews.go.com/PollingUnit/Politics/Story?id=3983729&page=4

Some of the questions dealing with experience and such were limited to Clinton, Obama & Edwards.

"Hillary's numbers are padded with Biden, Dodd, and Richardson's."

LOL, ya know you just inadvertently demonstrated Hillary's ability to capture these non viable candidates caucusers!

30. METHODOLOGY:
This ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted by telephone Dec. 6-9, 2007, among a random national sample of 1,136 adults, including an oversample of African-Americans for a total of 205 black respondents (weighted back to their correct share of the national population). The results have a three-point error margin for the full sample, four points for the sample of 610 Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents, five points for the sample of 409 Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, 4.5 points for the sample of 429 likely Democratic primary voters and 5.5 points for the sample of 293 likely Republican primary voters. Sampling, data collection and tabulation by TNS of Horsham, Pa.

I wonder how many people called never heard of any of the candidates besides Hillary?
