SC POLL: Hillary 44 (-3), Obama 40 (+7), Edwards 11
Poll: South Carolina Dem Race Tight
By Eric Kleefeld - December 11, 2007, 6:02PM

The new SurveyUSA poll of South Carolina shows a narrowing Democratic field. Hillary Clinton has a statistically insignificant 44%-40% lead over Barack Obama, with John Edwards way behind at only 11%. In SurveyUSA's last poll a month ago, Hillary led Obama 47%-33%.

Interestingly, the internals show little change in terms of Obama's performance with white voters or Hillary's performance with blacks. The change has come in the demographic make-up of likely voters. A month ago, African-Americans made up 49% of likely voters — whereas now they are measured as taking up 54% of the likely Dem electorate, providing a net boost for Obama.

1. Resistance Is Fu... Aww Fuck...
I have no idea of the outcome of this thing, but it is very amusing to see what's transpiring. I only hope that Clinton's panic yields a few more "Barack was a cunning and calculating 5-year-old" howlers.

2. While I say good for Obama, I hate this poll
It doesnt include the names of the other candidates. It asks if one would vote for Hillary, Obama, Edwards or some other dem. With a poll like that, people are more likely to vote for the candidates that are listed IMO.

4. Good point
But it does show that most people prefer Obama or Hillary to Edwards.

5. Well we knew that already
But by the time we reach SC, it prob will be more than a 3 person race.

13. That is true but
I also suspect that listing out all the candidates might have an effect of bolstering tha last candidate mentioneed if the polled individual has not engagesd.

but not listing all probable indlates the percentages equally for everyone.

3. The interesting thing about all the latest polls
is that this is essentially a two-person race. Edwards just isn't catching on anywhere.

10. well I don't like Edwards, so the results don't bother me...
but I have to say I'm surprised. I really expected he would do better, especially in states like S.C.

11. This is awful for Edwards
He won SC handily last time - with I think 45% of the vote. NC and SC were the only states he won. Other than that the "close" states were Iowa and WI - where Kerry got about 15% more votes than he did in each.

If he doesn't win Iowa and SC, where would he win.

12. He won SC
He wasn't still in the race for NC. It was a quickly thrown together caucus to save face. Hardly anyone voted except party insiders and Edwards backers. It was all about the Veepstakes by then. I think it was Al Sharpton who wanted to sue the state of North Carolina because the whole thing was so bogus. That's how I remember it, anyhow.

14. Thanks, I always saw him credited with NC
He was extremely overhyped in 2004 - to the extent of a NYT op-ed in the last week of February saying the Democratic nominee was named John, but the last name was uncertain. Kerry had won 16 primaries, Edwards had woin SC. Kerry clinched it the next week - when he won all the big states by big double digits.

SC was his best state.

17. I couldn't believe my eyes.
We get the NYT and it was just stunning. I had seen the state level polling report.com analyses and knew that Kerry had it and just couldn't get why the news media pretended WI was close and that Edwards had a chance. It was clear that he was a media darling that they really wanted to suddenly surge. It is interesting that some of the media that fawned over him in 2004 is not enthralled now - they are on to new candidates. But, I am amazed that the left is so eager to have a real left wing candidate that they believe that he can go from voting not all that different than Harry Reid to believing he is to the left of Harkin, Kennedy and the late Wellstone.
