Kos blogger: Huckabee is a nightmare for the GOP
Great explanation of the GOP disaster that is Mike Huckabee

Huckabee rocketing up the primary polls is a disaster for the Republican party. His rise reveals deep flaws in their Big Tent and their 2008 presidential field.

duha's diary :: ::
With the recent stories about the Dumond case and now his past views on quarantining AIDS victims and that gays are publich health risks, it should be apparant why Huckabee would go down hard in the general, no matter how much reporters like him. This guy isn't ready for national attention. He's got a bunch of crazy and kooky stuff that you can get away with being a governor of a small state but you could never get away with running for president.

Look, the GOP insiders already knew all of this, which is why they've ignored him for so long. The DC and NYC GOP establishment just never thought their 2008 field would be so weak and flawed that their base has rejected everyone. 18 months ago it was going to be Frist, Allen, McCain, Giuliani, Brownback, and Romney, with Jeb Bush waiting in the wings. Frist got in trouble. Allen got macaca'd. The GOP realized that W has poisoned the name of Bush. McCain is good to round out a presidential field, but he burned too many bridges to be acceptable to the base now. Giuliani has more skeletons in his closet than anyone, and he's a NYC 'liberal' to boot. They tried adding Thompson as the conservative savior to replace Allen. The old man smell isn't working on anyone but Chris Matthews and he is tanking. Romney is still Mormon and still a flip flopping Massachusetts governor. Brownback generated negative excitement. So the evangelical base had nowhere to turn but Huckabee.

3. I think that's what the math adds up to as well.
When you calculate all of this, Hucky is well suited to win the nomination. Then he loses all women and independents in the General.

6. I actually think most Americans learned their lesson with 8 years of
the "reborn" being in the WH! I know I used to be a lot more tolerant of the different religions, but Shrub has turned me against most of them!

When his views are known by the public at large he will lose all Dems & Independents.

10. I wish I was as optimistic
There is a large part of the electorate who are, in the words of the Waco Kid, "Simple farming folk. People of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know...morons". Huckleberry Hound will play them like violins, and if they can't win the election for him, they could at least push him into Diebold range.

9. Rove is smart enough to moderate Bush's language somewhat
Bush won't do things like openly say he doesn't believe in evolution, he'll say things like he thinks it should be left up to the local school districts to decide on whether or not creationism should be taught in schools. That's smart politics on the part of the people coaching him.

Huckleberry, on the other hand, doesn't have the political filter.

11. Right--Chimpy was enough of a politician to stick to the script, also--
Hucky loves the sound of his own voice too much--he can't stop himself from doing his pulpit act. Preachers overdo it, with hyperbole and parables and silly analogies, to inspire the faithful--there's a purpose to the flowery language and fire and brimstone. It doesn't translate well to politics.
