New NYTimes/CBS Poll: Explain, Don’t Attack

By Dalia Sussman

The latest New York Times/CBS News poll finds voters give the presidential candidates positive marks on at least one score at this stage in their campaigns: They credit them with spending more time explaining what they would do as president rather than attacking their opponents.

Still, while no candidate tested in the poll was perceived as attacking more than explaining, some candidates were given more credit than others.

Hillary Clinton was viewed as running the most positive campaign of the leading Democratic candidates. About seven in 10 Democratic primary voters said she has spent more time explaining, four times the number who said she has spent more time attacking.

Six in 10 Democrats said Barack Obama has been explaining, compared with 25 percent who said he has been attacking. Fewer, 45 percent, said John Edwards has spent more time explaining his positions, while 29 percent said he has spent more time being negative.

<snip GOP stuff>

But as the primary season begins and the campaign rhetoric heats up, perceptions can certainly change.

The telephone poll was conducted nationwide from Dec. 5-9 with 1,133 adults, including 417 Democratic primary voters and 266 Republican primary voters. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 5 percentage points for Democratic voters and 6 percentage points for Republican voters. Complete poll results and story will be available this evening at nytimes.com.

1. Now that's interesting
Edwards may not get away with it, after all. I'd been wondering how much Obama and Clinton would pay in negativity price. But it looks like Edwards took the hit on this one.

10. Edwards is the worst one in the race
His internal polls must have shown negative campaigning was hurting him because now he pretends he's not doing it.

3. Further proof the anti-Hillary people live in a delusional bubble-world.

5. Well, here is what the pro-Hillary people are saying.
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=washingtonstory&sid=anRcoLyfN0VM

To appreciate Hillary Clinton's fundamental political problem, consider the 11 Democrats from Philadelphia who gathered last week to discuss the U.S. presidential race, almost all of whom would vote for her in a general election.

...

The concerns about Clinton, 60, a New York senator, are that she is devious, calculating and, fairly or not, a divisive figure in American politics.

...

It was revealing, too, when Hart pushed them to envision these senators as leaders of the country or, as he put it, their ``boss.'' Obama, they say, would be inspirational, motivating, charismatic and compassionate. After praising Clinton's experience and intelligence, they say she would be demanding, difficult, maybe even a little scary.

9. The Iowa poll said the opposite
and I trust that one much more because it people in Iowa, where people are paying closer attention. And it still polled more people than this one even though this one is a national poll.

6. I guess she's tanking just cuz of her then
Which is actually better than tanking because of all her stupid attacks. Looks like people are just deciding they don't want her, thank god.

7. And further evidence that most of these polls are absolutely meaningless.
The most positive campaign is being run by Bill Richardson. But many of the respondents may not have heard of him, so he doesn't count. Give me a break.

11. But the likely Iowa caucus participants know Hillary is running the most negative campaign:
Yesterday's MSNBC/Mason-Dixon/McClatchy poll of likely Iowa caucus participants asked who they thought was running the most negative campaign, and the results aren't too surprising:

24% - Hillary
10% - Obama
09% - Edwards
04% - Kucinich
02% - Dodd
01% - Biden
00% - Richardson
