Does it mean anything that freepers loath Huckabee?
Edited on Mon Dec-10-07 11:36 AM by cali
Because they do; they hate him almost as much as they hate Rudy. And they hate his preacher persona as well as his raising taxes and pardoning/working to parole violent inmates. So can anything be extrapolated from this? I think of freepers as even more to the right of the bulk of the party and more fundy xian than most repukes. I also think of them as more into politics than most of their co-repukes.

Judging by FR, the enthusiasm for their candidates is almost non-existent. They were terribly excited by Grandpa Fred, but the thrill is largely gone. They can't stand Rudy, McCain, Huckabee and barely tolerate Mittkins.

Is this indicative of the larger base?

1. I think the wheels have come off, and without a Big Issue...
these pricks are going to get "thumped" real hard in '08.

I don't see anything gaining traction on a national level. Look at the issues polls. I can't find anything that really favors the GOPee.

2. It's fractures in the party. I wouldn't say "freepers" are one cohesive bloc.
The national-security hawks like Rudy, but the social conservatives hate him. The fiscal/economic conservatives hate Huckabee; the religious conservatives love him. And on any political board; negativity is easy and support is difficult. Everyone thought Fred could unite them, as a tough-talking-but-blank-slate Bush clone. Didn't work.

3. They Like Him Because He Hates Gays ...They Don't Like Him Because He Doesn't Hate People Of Color
Freak Republic is as representative of main stream GOPU thought as D U is representative of main stream Democratic thought...

5. Actually, they don't like him chiefly because
of the pardons and the preacher stuff. But if they don't like him, I think it might indicate that once more is known about him, the majority in the repuke party may reject him. DU may not be representative of the Dem party, but it's not wholly irrelevant either. I think the same is true of freeperville regarding the repuke party. And sometimes DU is ahead of the curve regarding dem opinion. The war is a good example of that.

6. Not To Be Contentious But Dennis Kucinich Is The Most Popular Democrat At DU
We will learn in the fullness of time if rank and file Democrats feel the same way...

It's been so long since I perused Freak Republic that I don't know the prevailing sentiment there... It's strange they don't like the "preacher stuff"... I thought many of them religious... I don't think it's his preaching that offends them but the fact he doesn't hate the poor and people of color with the same gusto that they do...

9. Sure. It's clear that DU is wrong about Kucinich, but I see that
as more obligatory support for the left wing of the party than realistic support. That seems divided between Edwards and Obam.

As for freeperville, the vast majority are religious, but it is indeed, in part, his religious preacher man thing that bugs them. And sorry, I haven't seen one comment about him re the poor or people of color.

From a thread on the front page there:

After reading this, I cannot think of a single reason I could ever vote for this nut.
I say this as a conservative, God-fearing, Christian.

Huckabee is spewing BS like Falwell and Robertson did right after 9/11.

religion to cover up their nanny state, populist,

I call both frauds.

Huckabee told the pastors gathered in the Salt Palace Convention Center that while the March 1, 1997, tornadoes which struck Arkansas were tragic, at least the devastation could be clearly seen from a helicopter. In contrast, he said, the catalysts for the nation’s recent school shootings — including the one March 24 near Jonesboro that left four students and a teacher dead and 10 others wounded — were harder to see but were driven by “the winds of spiritual change in a nation that has forgotten its God.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Driven by the winds of spiritual change?
That is such bunk and BS I don’t even know where to start.

How about evil won that one? God didn’t have anything to do with the death of those children. It wasn’t God’s will, just like 9/11 wasn’t God’s will either.

There is good and evil. Sometimes evil wins.

11. Thanks, Cali
As I said long ago, The Mittster is the "Chosen One" but they will accept McCain... Thompson has disappointed and Rudi is too "dirtied up to win"... That doesn't mean the voters will not confound the GOPU powers that be and vote for Rudi but I still think it's The Mittster or McCain...

4. Anyone who is interested in fiscal reponsibility hates Huckabee, and he has a slimey history too
The Jesus-rode-a-dinosaur crowd loves Huckabee, and I think this primary is indicative of a battle between them and the rest of Republicans.

I think voters interested in fiscal responsibility are stating to recognize that they should vote for Democrats. If Huckabee is nominated, it will speed this along.

7. If you're actually talking about Freepers, and not Republicans in general...
then it's meaningless.

The Free Republic is a shit stain on the underpants of the GOP -- not the kind of thing you like the general public to view. They are NOT representative of anything but themselves.

(A casual read of DU might give the impression that we hate Hillary, Obama, and just about all the other Dem candidates.)

12. Freeper excitement is what helped bring Fred into the race--don't underestimate them.
I first read about Fred on FR back in January--they were fantasizing about him getting into the race very early on. They hated Rudy--Rudy has been tanking. They hated McCain--McCain is stuck in neutral. If they hate Hucky, then Hucky will eventually tank as well. As FR goes, so goes the party, eventually. They do have their unrealistic "Kucinich" fantasy candidate in Duncan Hunter, but generally, they are pretty predictive of how well the candidates will do.

13. Because of their extreme fanaticism, the Freepers have a place at the GOP table.
Edited on Mon Dec-10-07 12:33 PM by Buzz Clik
Some of their reps have gotten their 15-minute photo-op with Bush. Without question, they rally the masses of the poorly informed and willfully ignorant.

Are they king makers? Not likely. Thompson is dead in water right now. They've been so busy trying to submarine Clinton, Obama, and Edwards that they are just now realizing that they will have to choose from a collection of varnished turds. We'll see what happens.

15. Thompson failed on his own--he had the excitement and support behind him, but
sleep-walked through his own campaign. Had he taken off, the Freeps would have been orgasmic--even now, they still support him. I will give the Freeps credit--they are generally pretty well-informed on issues and candidates, even if I find their views abhorrent. I don't actually think they're "fringe right" extremists the way they are painted--they're actually not too far from typical GOPer-on-the-street mentality. That's why I think they're a pretty good gauge of a candidate's eventual support.

16. Freepers are mainstream GOP? Curse the thought.
It will be interesting to watch. If Thompson stays politically alive despite his near brain death, and if Huckabee withers, then you're correct.

I'm going to assume that the Freepers are not representative -- Thompson will fade away and Huckey will be a force to contend with well past South Carolina.

I'll betcha a bushel of Indiana corn against ... well .. whatever you have to offer.

17. The GOP will take Hucky down. He's like a cute little Frankenstein
Edited on Mon Dec-10-07 12:57 PM by wienerdoggie
that broke out of the second tier, which is where he really belonged. They were going to let him be VP, but now he believes his own press and hype, and the GOP doesn't want to be embarrassed by this ingorant tax-and-spend rapist-hugging religious loon. I don't blame them--he is NOT Presidential material, even less so than Rudy or Romney, and McCain is a veritable statesman next to Huck. The GOP is not that stupid--as bad as Chimpy was for the party, Hucky would be the death knell. The fiscal conservatives, small-gov types and the non-religious would leave in droves--I could easily see Hillary becoming their choice, even if Huck is more charming. I don't know if Fred will survive--he'd have to win SC. I stand by my statement that Freeps are pretty close to mainstream (just a little further right). I'll meet your bushel with a bushel of far-superior Nebraska corn.

8. They don't like him because he's the exact inverse of Rudy--
Rudy's a fiscal/security hawk but socially moderate and not religious. Hucky is a religious wacko and a social conservative, but a fiscal liberal who was soft on crime (except for those executions he keeps bragging about). It makes perfect sense that they wouldn't like either one--neither is a good representative of what the GOPers want. What's funny is that the demand for purity on abortion is absolutely TEARING the party apart, candidate-wise. If they were smart, they'd realize that a President can do VERY LITTLE about abortion aside from judicial appointments--but someone who doesn't have good foreign policy or economic experience can really, really fuck things up. That's what happened with Chimpy. Abortion's still legal, but we're in deep doo-doo.
