Giuliani: Security for Nathan was NYPD's idea
The NYPD security that protected Judith Nathan during an affair with Rudy Giuliani -- protection which reportedly began its operations even before the affair was made public -- was put in place to protect Nathan's life, the former New York mayor contends.

Pressing Giuliani on the timing of the security for Nathan, Russert asked the former mayor if threats against her had indeed been made before the relationship was known. "The threats were after," Giuliani said, adding that during "a whole big portion of 2000 where our relationship was public, there were threats. They had to be responded to."

Giuliani maintains he had no personal role in ordering the security. "The police department did every single thing that was done for Judith, or for me, or for anybody else close to me, was based upon threat assessments made by other people who are professionals here," he said, "and they’ve made it very clear that that, that that’s the case."

Asked by Russert if, by that reasoning, it would be appropriate for a president to allow Secret Service protection for a mistress, Giuliani dismissed the idea.

"It would not be appropriate to, to do it for that reason," the candidate fired back. "The reason it's done is because somebody threatens to do harm, and the people who assess it come to the conclusion that it is necessary to do this."

1. I hope the NYPD weighs in and tells us if this was their idea.
Somehow I think the stories might differ, especially the dog walking.

3. Of course. Cops are always looking for the opportunity to guard someone's mistress.
Giuliani has lost his mind.

7. Some of them might actually be happy with safe duty
that gets them inside info on the life of a powerful local pol. Those are the kinda cops we don't really need though.

8. That talent must be why Rudy thinks he can be president nowadays.
dodge and deflect seem more important to the GOP than any real moral compass.

9. Ah how many NYC residents who have received threats get police protection & dog walkers.
Giuliani would be wise to end his campaign. As soon as the campaign dollars stop rolling in, he will.

I read the NYS law lets him keep donations for running for office even if he drops out. Haven't verified.

I hope he stays in long enough for his business dealings to be scrutinized and lead up to an indictment.
