I'll give it that. Not in a good way either.
It's just that it amazes me. First of all, how the hell could somebody so ignorant and incompetent ever be considered a viable presidential candidate. Then the obvious character flaws, from his days skipping out on the National Guard, the cocaine and alcohol issues, to his campaign attacking McCain's family in South Carolina to the scrubbing of Florida voters and stealing an election.
Then his presidency itself. Dropping the ball before 9/11. Exploiting it. Starting a war for no reason. Record deficits. Ruining our country's reputation in the world. Advocating torture. Advocating all kinds of xenophobia. Katrina. The Orwellian Language. (Healthy Forests?) Extreme arrogance. Focus on politics not on policy. etc etc.
If you go back and read Molly Ivins's two books on Bush, plus Greg Palast's books, all of Jim Moore's works on Rove, Richard Clarke's book, columns and writing from people like Paul Krugman, it all paints a bad bad picture. It's fascinating, like watching a train wreck. It's hurtful, embarassing and catastrophic. But it all reads like a blueprint for what an American, not just a presidency, should not be. I mean, really, who or what is more unAmerican than this White House? Who best exemplifies what our country is not supposed to stand for?
I think the one good thing Bush and his ilk has done is they have forced millions of Americans to open their eyes. I have always paid some attention to politics. I have always been somewhat politcal, and I've always been a Dem, but I never truly looked at our country. Bush changed all of that. I read several papers, different websites, books etc. I am aware of my country and events in the world. My eyes have been opened. Lots of us have been.
My notion is that if anything good has come from this nightmare, it's that the people who care about our country, the most passionate and compassionate are no longer apathetic. We're interested and aware. We're willing to fight.
I used to think something as bad as this administration could never happen to our country. Maybe a lot of us felt that same way. But it can and it did.
Now we are better informed and better prepared to stop it.
We now know how to fight. So we'll be alright. We'll move on to better days.
It's people like all of us, who will help make America great again.
