Why is a black or female candidate automatically considered liberal?

I want to know, because it looks to me like Hillary and Obama are both supporting the corporate status quo. It looks to me like nothing will change, or very little at best, in our government.

I don't like them because of their positions on issues and voting records, not because of their gender or skin color.

I remember when Sandra Day O'Connor became the first woman on the Supreme Court. Lots of people thought she would make the place liberal. I knew better. It didn't happen.

FOLKS, just because some judge or candidate or politician is female or minority, DO NOT ASSUME that they are liberal or progressive. We all know about Kay Bailey Hutchison, Elizabeth Dole, Clarence Thomas, Alberto Gonzales, and Condi Rice.

We have a woman Speaker of the House. Big deal. I don't see any great progressive push. I see a bunch of frightened Democrats huddled behind her.

2. No, I have heard people assume that.

And the Republicans can point to Gonzo and Condi and say "Look how liberal we are! We let Mexicans and Blacks get to be Cabinet Members in our administration."

I think it's called tokenism.

Their views are what's important.

3. We have to elect someone who is black or female
We have to make a statement. No more white males! It doesn't matter if the person is the best person for the job, so long as they're not a white male.

4. You being sarcastic?

Or are we playing affirmative action? Clarence Thomas is incompetent and he got ahead through affirmative action, unfortunately.

7. I am
There are some who are of the opinion that we "must" elect Obama or Clinton to make some sort of statement because otherwise it will just be business as usual, e.g., "another white man".

6. Kerry was as true a "Liberal" as you get in politics -- but he could not UNITE
even Democrats. Maybe having a long liberal record is not what is needed to bring
change for the better.

8. It's good because it helps break glass ceilings for the gender/minorities involved but
it doesn't do anything to fight the neoliberal/neoconservative agenda and the religious right's theocratic aims.

9. In this case, go with the "white male" from Cleveland.
Vote Dennis. Not because he's a white male. Because he's a REAL Democrat.

10. Dennis is exactly what I'm thinking!
If I can't get him, I'll take Edwards.

Other than that, there is nobody who I consider to not be a corporate shill.

I absolutely cannot get excited about the suckbutt Democrats we have up there in D.C.
