Kevin Bacon, Tim Robbins to campaign for Democrat John Edwards
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) John Edwards is the latest Democratic presidential candidate to tout his celebrity backing, and on Sunday announced that actors Kevin Bacon and Tim Robbins will join him on the campaign trail in Iowa.

Edwards' announcement came as talk show host Oprah Winfrey stumped for Barack Obama over the weekend in Iowa, and as Hillary Rodham Clinton's famous husband, former President Bill Clinton, planned to return to the state Monday and Tuesday. The three candidates are in a tight race in the state that kicks off the presidential nominating season.

Just last week, Edwards, a former North Carolina senator and the 2004 vice presidential nominee, was joined on the campaign trail by Jean Smart, who plays the first lady on the popular FOX series ``24,'' and movie actress Madeleine Stowe, who appeared in films such as ``The Last of the Mohicans'' and ``Twelve Monkeys.'' Last month, performers Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne campaigned in Iowa on Edwards' behalf.

In Edwards' newest effort, his campaign is offering memorabilia signed by the senator and his famous friends Bacon and Robbins. It's part of a program to get supporters to tell their undecided friends and family about Edwards.

Robbins was expected to join Edwards in Iowa on Wednesday, followed by Bacon on Saturday and Sunday.

i wonder if they're only backing him because he's white?

1. I'm sure that must be it
I mean, Tim Robbins was so anti-war and yet he's endorsing someone who voted for it. Must be the white thing. For sure.

3. If Edwards were leading in the polls, they would be savaged by Clintonian Storm Troops
just as Obama has on this board and others.

How dare they not support the coronation of the "Goddess of Peace?" How dare they not prostrate themselves at the feet of the Queen of Diamonds?

The Robbins have always been for peace, and Edwards has redeemed himself from the IWR vote, unlike that unrepentant woman that is still voting to give Bush the benefit of the doubt on yet another war.

16. That speech means nothing if you support a co-sponsor of the war you protested
I just don't get clearly anti-war activists like Bonnie Riatt, Jackson Browne, Harry Bellafonte and now Tim Robbins who were screaming and singing in the streets leading up to the Iraq War are now endorsing someone who was full-throatingly and hawkishly calling for the very war they protested.

It's bizarre to me. Do they forget where he was politically? Are simple apologies for such horrible mistakes worthy of supporting and speaking for such? Goodbye credibility.

18. That speech stands on its own merits.
It was spot on at the time, regardless of what followed. Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon apparently have accepted Edwards' admission of a grave mistake, and are endorsing who they believe is the best candidate going forward.

Personally, my litmus test still stands. I will NOT vote in the Democratic primary for any candidate who voted for the IWR in 2002 or expressed support for invading.

I've heard Robbins speak a couple times (never live, though), and I've liked most everything I've heard. His support of Edwards adds to my confidence in my choice.

I respect Robbins - he's been laying his views and himself on the line for a long time now.

15. Because he's white?!! Not hardly...
The only candidate who has stood against the war consistently
is Dennis Kucinich and he's white.

This has nothing to do with race.

My view is that Kucinich is basically unelectable and John Edwards
is the best after that, all things considered.

I don't really care a horse's patoot who endorses whom, but the meanness of many of the responses to this thread look pretty bad to me.
