I think Obama has it sewn up now
After reading the coverage of the Oprah/Obama tour and watching some of it on CSPAN, I am willing to put my money on Obama for the nomination.

Here's what convinced me. The American public is more interested in celebrity than the state of the nation. It's an American Idol culture. One of the only smart things Bush has said is when he told Americans to go shopping. He knew 99% of the people in this country would rather go to the mall than pay attention to his failed policies.

The top search on Yahoo for the year was Britney. We have lost nearly 4000 soldiers in Iraq, the president wants to bomb Iran, and the housing market is collapsing. But the American people are more interested in a bimbo pop singer.

Obama knows all this. It was an absolutely brilliant move for him to bring Oprah on tour with him. They will appear before over 30,000 people this weekend. That is just incredible. How many other politicians have attracted crowds that large during a PRIMARY campaign??

It's like a rock concert tour. Obama is playing to the teeny bopper in all of us. And knowing America's fascination with celebrities, I really think this is probably the smartest campaign strategy I have ever seen from a presidential candidate. I gotta hand it to Barack.

For the record, I am still supporting Kucinich. But tonight I have admiration for Obama's campaign. Or should I call it his concert tour? :)

Absolutely brilliant!! :toast:

33. Not exactly
Hillary got into trouble because she seems inauthentic. I disagree pretty strongly with the original post. I think it really isn't about celebrity at this point. I think it's about authenticity. The public wants a genuine person to be President. Obama comes off as genuine. Clinton never has, and probably never will. Oprah helps because she plays to Obama's strength and the main difference--at least stylistically--between the two candidates. A good move for Obama, but for different reasons. For the record, I support Richardson, but Obama is my second choice.

41. One year ago, yes
But there's a blow back going on. People are fed up with politics, the culture, the government, the economy, etc. Look at the wrong track number--it's 66% wrong track. People also feel like the media focuses on things that aren't relevant. The media's numbers are worse than everyone's--lower than both Bush's and Congress' combined. There's something out there that's different this year. Huckabee found a way to tap into it, and now will likely get the Republican nomination. Obama's trying too, and if he succeeds, he'll win the presidency.

59. Newsflash: Hillary's not saying vote for me because my Mom thinks I'm great
The whole person of having Mrs. Rodham and Chelsea there, was "bring a buddy to caucus." Sen. Clinton was trying to encourage everyone to bring a buddy with them to caucus in January, so she said she brought a couple of buddies with her--her mom and daugther.

Furthermore, Mrs. Rodham and Chelsea had no speaking roles.

Get a freaking grip.

At lunch at work a few weeks ago, the topic of conversation was America's Top Model. In an effort to change the subject, someone mentioned Dennis Kucinich and the 22 year old who loves America's Top Model asked "who is that?"

Most people could care about who is running for president. But they know the names of Britney's kids and who won American Idol last year.

And they all LOVE Oprah. So they will vote for Obama. I am ready to put money on it. :)

16. I think it's still a bit early to coronate, but I have to agree with your spot-on assessment
of the average American consumer/voter. Attention span: 15 seconds. Attention to detail: Zip. Willingness to believe a mindless barrage of talking points: like sheep to the slaughter. I look around sometimes and think I'm living in a different reality. Anyway, yeah, rockstar for President.. that may be where we're headed, sadly. Sign of the times, I guess. In 20 or 30 years, if there is still an America standing, we'll have a REAL progressive President and our grandchildren will laugh that it took glitz and glamour to get us there. Oprah didn't make her millions because people could think for themselves. Still, a year is a long time. We'll see. We'll see...

who aren't interested in anything serious.

We should make that a damn bumper sticker, or at least the 2008 campaign slogan.

Let's just keep telling the American people, over and over again, that they are dense, materialistic, superficial dolts.

Hey! Here's an idea! Let's call them "sheeple"! That's demeaning and condescending!

The more we talk about how stupid the American people are, the more they will be interested in progressive ideas, progressive solutions.

"Hey, America! We know you're stupid! Vote Democratic!"

You may not have said any of these things, but I guarantee you that's how that comes across.

I really hope that neither Hillary Clinton nor Barak Obama are the Democratic candidate in 2008 . . . I'm not happy with their positions on many issues, and they're both corporatist candidates who will say anything to get elected . . . we can do better . . .

it would be utterly depressing. Not so much because I don't care for Obama, but because it would reflect how vapid, superficial and empty we have become as a society if we were to vote according to the wishes of some celebrity. No performer should have the power to alter the course of the democratic process of a nation. On the other hand, nothing should surprise me from a country who voted twice for Bush.

Even a little reading on DU makes it obvious that Americans are still very prejudiced. Voters will panic in the booth and it will be between Clinton and Edwards. Clinton will have the edge just for being a woman and a Clinton. This is something many black Americans already anticipate, and why many blacks prefer Clinton to Obama.

70. Neither Rove nor Murdoch is more popular than Oprah
Most Americans don't even know who Murdoch is and all they know about Rove is that he used to work for Bush. They are too busy watching American Idol - and Oprah :)
