Why Black Women Prefer Clinton To Obama
Bill Clinton's Presidency Remembered With Fondness; Hillary Seen As A Winner

(CBS) By CBSNews.com's Michelle Peltier

One of the intriguing stories of Campaign '08 is the popularity of Hillary Clinton with black women who might be expected to support Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, the first African-American to emerge as a serious contender for a major party presidential nomination.

A series of CBS News polls show the New York senator has a 15-point lead over Obama among black women. Other polls have confirmed Clinton’s popularity with African-American women.

Overwhelmingly, the most frequently stated reasons women give for favoring Hillary Clinton are that they have positive feelings about her husband and his administration and they think she's got the best shot of any of the Democrats to win against the Republicans.

"Most Black women simply believe Clinton can win," said former Gore campaign manager and Democratic strategist Donna Brazile. "They loved her husband Bill and would like to see 'a woman elected first'"

1. It's all about Bill...
They want Bill back in the White House. That's the reason why a lot of people are behind Hillary though, not just black women.

12. quite naive
Hillary does not equal Bill.

And Hillary has as much chance to win as Dukakis did back in 88, IMO.

I hope reality sets in before too long. Obama and Edwards have a far more realistic chance across regions and parties.

i just don't get how anyone can think that had she been on her second term as a junior senator and decided to declare her candidacy for the democrat presidential nominee she'd have gotten even a fraction of the press she has had as the former first lady.

24. I'm a black woman
I'm not poor. Uneducated. I have no mouths to feed other than my own.

And I'm voting for Edwards.

However, I seem to recall reading at one point that one of the best 'groups' in terms of 'doing better/advancing' during the Clinton Administration was black women. But specifically - those who benefited from welfare to work programs, came from the poorest segment - that reached the middle class.

I don't think there are many upper middle class and beyond black women that trust her. Just my two cents as one of "them thar negresses". :-)

BTW - Can I add a white woman's perspective? My mom is one. She just turned 60 last month. Professional college educated woman. However, she's never forgiven Hillary for the 'staying home and baking cookies' comment. A lot of women in my mom's generation DID stay home with their children when they were young and supported their husband's career path. They then (like her) escaped from the House the minute the youngest was in grade school (why not use the degree - eh?).

Now, I'd be interested to see what happens when educated white women that are Clinton's age start remembering how she alienated them 15 years ago. People have long memories.

Never forgave her for being a Goldwater Girl. While my mom was out protesting againts the war in Vietnam and fighting for Civil Rights (marching and raising hell) - Clinton was one of 'them'. One of those people that Goldwater said the Republicans shouldn't worry about.

Remember?

I think as a professional White Woman with a black husband and two black children - she has earned the right to hold it against her. ;-)

ETA - and if you don't think what happened in the past should be of concern . . . then why don't we let as a party let Billy Bob Strom and Billy Bob Trent off the hook?
